Overwatch’s fifth season of Reign of Talon, which arrived in early October, brought Halloween back to the game with limited-time modes and exclusive spooky cosmetics! However, the biggest focus has been the major changes to the hero shooter’s playable roster. Alongside the release of new support hero Doctrine, Blizzard reworked two existing characters: Sombra and Roadhog.

With so many hero changes arriving this season, understanding the meta is essential to picking the best options for each role.

Best Tanks for Season 5

D.Mon

D.Mon, the latest tank to join Overwatch, has made a strong debut in the meta! She's seen plenty of play since launch while maintaining an excellent win rate.

Over the past few months, and with Roadhog’s rework, D.Mon’s pick and ban rates have dipped slightly. That doesn’t mean she has lost her edge, though: her win rate has remained solidly above 50%.

With a nearly complete kit that fits a variety of team compositions, and the spotlight now on other heroes in her class, this is the perfect opportunity to master her and rack up wins in ranked!

If you’re interested in learning more about D.Mon, we put together a complete, up-to-date guide to playing the character!link outside website

Doomfist

Here’s a spoiler for today’s list: dive teams are very strong across the board, so expect to see several heroes from that composition. Doomfist is a case in point. With his high mobility and damage, he's a major presence in the current meta and highly effective alongside other dive heroes.

When mobility reigns supreme, an aggressive tank who can keep up with the push and help take out the opposing backline can make all the difference. That’s why Doomfist is one of the most frequently banned heroes in ranked, and still wins most of his matches when he's picked.

His biggest drawback is the steep learning curve. He’s not the best choice for players who have never used him. Of course, playing Doomfist and learning how to master him is a great way to climb the ranks, but I recommend getting in plenty of casual matches first!

Winston

If you’re new to hero shooters, I strongly recommend Winston. He shares Doomfist’s key strengths, both heroes can initiate fights and make dives easier. He may have less kill potential than the previous tank, but his abilities are simpler and help keep both him and his team safe without putting them at risk.

Just by initiating fights, you’ll provide a natural shield for flanking DPS, who are among the strongest heroes right now. You can also offer even more protection with your bubble.

Best DPS for Season 5

Tracer

In a mobility-focused meta, Tracer is impossible to overlook. She’s a natural fit as a flanker, works well with the tanks mentioned above, and can counter many of the season’s dominant heroes!

However, she comes with the same caveat as Doomfist: difficulty. A poorly timed Recall can leave her in a bad spot, close to opponents and vulnerable to their attacks. She’ll also be without her main escape tool for several seconds.

Genji

Genji is another mobile flanker who shares all of Tracer’s strengths while being a little easier to play. It’s worth noting that the ninja received some major buffs at the start of the season. Here are the changes:

  • Swift Strike: Damage increased from 50 to 60.
  • Dragonblade: Damage decreased from 110 to 100, but swing speed increased by 15%.

Losing damage on Dragonblade, Genji’s ultimate, is obviously not ideal. But when you factor in the increased attack speed, the changes amount to an overall improvement.

Make the most of these buffs to make an impact and take out the enemy backline.

    Cassidy

We’ve talked about plenty of mobile heroes, both tanks and DPS, and how they’ve become some of the biggest names this season. That makes an anti-flanker an essential counterpick in the current meta.

Cassidy fits the bill perfectly. He’s well known as a strong answer to dive compositions, thanks in large part to his Flashbang. The grenade not only greatly slows enemies, but also disables all their movement abilities.

Tracer and Genji need to get close to deal significant damage, giving Cassidy the perfect opportunity to use his bang, shut down their key strengths, and take advantage of his high close-range damage to land easy headshots.

    Best Supports for Season 5

    Doctrine

As in most competitive games, newly released characters tend to be extremely strong compared with the rest of the roster, and Doctrine was no exception. Within a week, the new support received nerfs to his primary attack and Revitalizing Drones.

That doesn’t mean he’s weak now; it just shows how unbalanced Doctrine was. Even after the nerfs, he remains the most popular hero in his role and has the highest win rate!

There’s a familiar pattern in games: newly released or extremely popular heroes tend to have lower win rates because casual and newer players are still learning how to use them, dragging down the stats. The fact that Doctrine bucks the trend, even as the most-picked hero, shows just how dominant he remains in the meta.

    Sombra

You may've noticed that Sombra sits just behind Doctrine in second place for wins. Her situation is very similar: although she isn’t entirely new, Sombra received a major rework and moved from DPS to support. She’s also another hero who was adjusted just one week into the season.

As a result, many players have given her a try and are seeing incredible results. Several factors make her a must-pick in this role. Sombra can keep up with dives thanks to her teleport and invisibility, which boost her movement speed.

She can also heal with abilities that have very short channel times, quickly restoring her allies’ health, whether by hacking them or using Cyber Space, before getting back to helping her team in other ways, such as finishing off an enemy or hacking health packs scattered around the map.

Finally, her ultimate is also great for stopping enemy dives. Preventing opponents from using their abilities is an effective way to avoid a quick elimination followed by an escape from more mobile DPS heroes.

    Ana

Ana, like Cassidy, is an essential counter to the meta’s strongest composition. Much of her strength comes from a new upgrade she received this season: Local Anesthetic. Her Sleep Darts now do more than put an enemy to sleep, they also trigger an explosion that slows and damages nearby enemies.

When a tank and two agile DPS heroes are charging toward your backline, this upgrade can make a huge difference. Even if you miss the dart, the explosion can still slow their advance.

The key now isn't to focus solely on healing your team, but to watch for these threats and stop them with Sleep Dart.

    Conclusion

The meta is heavily centered on dive compositions, and many heroes have become strong picks indirectly because they’re so good at defending against this strategy.
