If you have been following the video game world for a while, you know that the biggest impacts do not always come from studios with billion-dollar budgets. Sometimes, a great idea, a unique art direction, and a massive dose of passion are all a small group of developers needs to change the industry (or, at least, the hearts of players).

Today, we at UmGamer have selected some of the most influential indie games. These are titles that left their mark, defining genres, introducing new ideas, and inspiring future game creators.

But first, let us consider one detail:

What defines an Indie game?

Traditionally, the rule for classifying a game as indie (independent) was simple: these were projects developed by smaller studios using their own resources, created without the financial backing or distribution infrastructure of major industry corporations.

However, as the market matured, this definition shifted. Today, the "indie" label goes far beyond budgets or team sizes; it is deeply connected to the artistic vision and creative autonomy of the developers.

Being independent nowadays means having the power to manage your own project and make bold decisions without the interference or commercial pressure of major publishers. This freedom often paves the way for innovation, allowing experimental mechanics and unique narratives to come to life.

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, PSP

Release date: December 20, 2004 | Developer: Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya

Discussing indie games without mentioning Cave Story is almost a historical sin. Developed entirely by Daisuke Amaya over five years in his spare time, the game is considered by many to be the pioneer of modern indies.

With gameplay inspired by classics like Metroid and Castlevania, it featured a mature story, multiple endings, and incredibly charismatic characters wrapped in a charming retro style. Cave Story proved that a single dedicated developer could create a masterpiece capable of rivaling the big studios of the era, opening doors and revealing new possibilities for independent creators.

Minecraft

Available on: Practically every modern platform (PC, consoles, mobile devices, and VR)

Release date: May 17, 2009 (Classic version) / November 18, 2011 (Full 1.0 version) | Developer: Mojang Studios

Before becoming the cultural phenomenon it is today and the best-selling intellectual property in video game history, Minecraft began as a modest experimental project created by a single person: Markus "Notch" Persson.

The game revolutionized the industry by introducing an infinite world made entirely of pixelated blocks, where the only limit was the player's imagination. By blending survival, exploration, and incredibly free construction tools, it ushered in a new era for sandbox games.

Minecraft proved that ultra-realistic graphics do not matter when you have refined gameplay mechanics and a community passionate about creating.

Super Meat Boy

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android

Release date: October 20, 2010 | Developer: Team Meat

If you enjoy modern platformers with incredibly precise controls and short stages, you have Super Meat Boy to thank.

Playing as an animated piece of meat trying to save his girlfriend made of bandages, the player faces numerous levels filled with buzzsaws, spikes, and bottomless pits.

The game dominated the Xbox Live Arcade era and showed that the frustration of dying hundreds of times can turn into pure satisfaction once you master the controls, learn the timing of the stage, and finally progress to the next one.

The title redefined difficulty in the independent scene and became one of the greatest icons of its generation. There is even a fascinating documentary about the creation of Super Meat Boy, Fez, and Braid called Indie Game: The Movie. It reveals the immense sacrifice required to produce Super Meat Boy, along with the general challenges of independent game development.

Release date: May 16, 2011 | Developer: Re-Logic

Often mistakenly dismissed at launch as just a 2D Minecraft, Terraria quickly proved to be a completely different and deeply complex game.

The game focuses heavily on RPG progression, boss battles, and hunting for precious loot rather than just basic survival. Featuring thousands of items to craft, NPCs to house, and biomes filled with secrets, it delivers one of the most engaging exploration journeys in the indie world. Thanks to more than a decade of massive, free updates crafted with care by Re-Logic, Terraria has cemented its status as a legendary community favorite and one of the most played games on the planet.

The Binding of Isaac

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, New Nintendo 3DS, Wii U

Release date: September 28, 2011 | Developer: Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl

Born during a game jam and inspired by heavy biblical themes and childhood trauma, The Binding of Isaac was largely responsible for popularizing and cementing the roguelike genre.

Controlling little Isaac, players must navigate the bizarre and grotesque basement of his home to escape his mother. With procedurally generated maps, tons of items that combine in chaotic ways, and a punishing difficulty level, every single run becomes unique.

Furthermore, the bizarre, grotesque, yet satirical themes formed an incredibly engaging mix. This success set the stage for Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel to release another bizarre and grotesque game in 2026, this time with a cat theme, called Mewgenics, which also became highly popular.

Shovel Knight

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One

Release date: June 26, 2014 | Developer/Publisher: Yacht Club Games

Originally funded via Kickstarter, Shovel Knight is a love letter to the 8-bit era. However, far from being an exercise in empty nostalgia, it refreshed classic formulas, keeping them recognizable while making them dynamic and engaging.

Controlling a knight who brandishes a shovel as a weapon, players explore vibrant stages with incredibly precise controls. Featuring a memorable chiptune soundtrack composed by Jake Kaufman and Manami Matsumae, alongside an excellent sense of humor, the game established Yacht Club Games as a benchmark for quality and proved that retro styling, when handled with care and polish, is timeless.

As a side note, Yacht Club Games released a new title in 2026, Mina the Hollowerlink outside website, which also achieved massive success!

Undertale

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One

Release date: September 15, 2015 | Developer: Toby Fox

Undertale is one of those rare miracles that transcend video games. Created almost entirely solo by Toby Fox, this RPG subverted all the rules of the genre by presenting a world where, depending on your choices, "nobody has to die."

Every battle can be resolved by talking, sparing, or befriending the monsters, though fighting remains an option. The battles themselves are very engaging because each opponent has a unique mini-game pattern where you must dodge attacks before making your move.

The way the game remembers your choices and breaks the fourth wall also left a massive impact. Combined with one of the most iconic soundtracks in recent memory, Undertale built a cultural empire that still echoes across the internet today, reminding everyone that empathy and creative storytelling are powerful tools for creators. In 2025, fans also welcomed Deltarune, a long-awaited parallel story to Undertale.

Stardew Valley

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android

Release date: February 26, 2016 | Developer: Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone

Developed entirely by a single person over the course of four years, Stardew Valley captured the essence of classic farming simulators like Harvest Moon and combined it with fresh mechanics and a rich story full of interaction, practically creating a new genre.

In this game, after inheriting your grandfather's old farm, you are invited to leave your stressful office life behind to plant, fish, mine, and build relationships with the residents of Pelican Town.

The game reflects immense care in every pixel, offering an experience that is almost therapeutic and incredibly rich in detail. More than just a commercial hit, Stardew Valley pioneered a new wave of cozy gaming.

Hollow Knight

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Release date: February 24, 2017 | Developer: Team Cherry

For many, Hollow Knight represents the pinnacle of the Metroidvania genre. Created by a small Australian studio, the game transports players into the ruined depths of Hallownest, a melancholy, mysterious, and incredibly beautiful kingdom of insects.

Featuring gameplay that demands surgical precision, challenging combat where you must understand your opponent's movements to survive, and a hand-drawn art direction that looks like a moving painting, the title won over critics and players alike.

The dense atmosphere, paired with Christopher Larkin's orchestral soundtrack and a steep difficulty curve, transformed the journey of the little Knight into an unforgettable experience.

For many years after Hollow Knight was released, rumors circulated that a new game in the same universe was on the way. Many believed, many doubted, and then in 2025, Hollow Knight: Silksong was born. It became a massive commercial success, retailing for just R$ 35.99 while delivering AAA quality. Silksong led many players to question why AAA games are so expensive and inaccessible.

Cuphead

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4

Release date: September 29, 2017 | Developer: Studio MDHR

Cuphead first caught the world's attention with its visuals, but it earned its place on this list because of its precise gameplay.

Inspired by 1930s cartoons, every single frame of the game was hand-drawn on paper and painted with watercolors by Studio MDHR. Behind this nostalgic and highly charming aesthetic lies a fierce run-and-gun action game focused on boss battles.

Cuphead proved that pushing art direction to the extreme of care and detail can result in one of the most beautiful and challenging marriages between art and video games, winning over countless players around the globe.

Available on: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android

Release date: August 7, 2018 (Full version) | Developer: Motion Twin

Dead Cells took the non-linear exploration of Metroidvanias and structured it with roguelike elements, blending them into what the developers affectionately dubbed a Roguevania.

Controlling a mass of cells inhabiting a decapitated corpse, you must fight your way through a constantly shifting castle. Beyond its gorgeous, detailed 3D pixel art style, Dead Cells stands out for its incredibly fast, fluid, and satisfying combat. Every weapon and ability functions differently and must be combined effectively to help you push further into the game. Once you reach the end, an even higher difficulty tier awaits. The exceptional replayability of Dead Cells, along with regular DLC updates from the developer, keeps the game alive to this day.
