BioWare has announced that it is shutting down and ending development of the next Mass Effect game. The project was still in its early stages, according to a statement the studio posted on social media. The decision brings more than three decades of work by one of the best-known teams among RPG fans to an end.In its statement, BioWare said its priority now is to support the people who worked on its games through the transition. The studio acknowledged how difficult the announcement was and thanked the players who had followed its stories, debated choices and formed bonds with its characters over the years. The statement looked back at BioWare’s catalog, including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem. The games and series span different eras of the studio, but the announcement did not say what will happen to its franchises beyond the cancellation of the new Mass Effect game. The closure comes months after a group of investors bought EA, BioWare’s owner, in a US$ 55 billion deal. The group includes Silver Lake, Affinity Partners and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The studio’s statement did not give a specific reason for the decision. For those awaiting news of the next Mass Effect adventure, one point is clear: early development on the project has ended. BioWare did not say how many employees will be affected by the closure or announce any new plans for the game.Via Eurogamer.
