GTA Online will remain active after GTA 6 launches

Take-Two confirms continued support for GTA Online after GTA 6 and reiterates that PC is becoming increasingly important to the company's strategy.

Take-Two has confirmed that Rockstar Games will continue supporting GTA Online after the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 and “beyond” that period. The statement was made during a meeting with shareholders, but the company did not specify how long the service will receive updates or what new content is planned.

Because GTA 6 will initially launch as a single-player-only experience, the new game will not have a multiplayer mode at release. As a result, GTA Online will remain the main option for players seeking an online experience in the franchise while Rockstar determines the series’ next steps.

Take-Two has not yet revealed what form the next version of the multiplayer component will take. Possibilities include a later integration with GTA 6 or a standalone product sold separately. There is also no official confirmation of its release window.

Dan Clancy, head of Twitch, said in an interview with Bloomberg that he expects GTA 6’s multiplayer mode to launch in 2027. According to him, Twitch has discussed the studio’s plans with Rockstar, as well as ways to involve content creators, but his statement does not represent confirmation from the developer.

During the same meeting, Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two’s chief executive officer, discussed the company’s strategy for new platforms. The company generally intends to release its games on systems with a significant audience, although it could change that approach if a platform ceases to be viable.

Zelnick also said that PC is becoming “increasingly important” to Take-Two. Rockstar typically prioritizes consoles at launch and releases PC versions later. John Ricchio, a former Rockstar producer, explained that this approach allows the game to be optimized first within the limitations of consoles before its performance is expanded for PC.

There is still no confirmation of when the PC version of GTA 6 will be released or how it will relate to the franchise’s next multiplayer offering.
