Nowadays, here in Brazil, it’s undeniable that, regardless of the convention, from the huge and internationally known CCXP or Brasil Game Show to small ones held in small towns’ convention centers, or even cultural and traditional ones such as Festival do Japão or To-Sa Matsuri, cosplays have become one of the main attractions in all of them.

Growing stronger and stronger here, both due to the popularization of cosplaying and to the increasingly easy access to materials and accessories (we could only dream back in the days of walking inside a store downtown and simply finding a huge variety of colorful wigs and contacts, without the need to import them from some obscure shady website and wait two months to get it!) the amount of amazing cosplayers, passionate about what they do and about the characters they bring to life, that we come across in conventions is huge.

Our team who were covering Gamescom Latam 2024 put together some of the cooler cosplays we came across while attending! Noting that we were not present every day, we didn’t get to interview everyone there, and the order of this list is in no way any sort of ranking!

We spoke for a little while with all the cosplayers below, asked them the motivation behind their character choices, and brought you 25 examples of incredible cosplays, who were well-made and standing out, being interpreted by people in love with what they do! Check it out:

Final Fantasy

Starting off our list with a category who you, our readers, seem to love a lot: Final Fantasy! There weren’t many cosplays from the franchise in Gamescom Latam, but we managed to find some wonderful ones.

As every fan of the saga is well aware of, the new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, Dawntrail, has been recently released. To prepare for the launch, sweetsenkai cosplayed their character in the MMO! Complete with ears that move and a pajama which are canonical in the game, to symbolize their last day of rest before Dawntrail.

A feeling that many of us had the happiness of feeling in these last few years was playing Final Fantasy VII Remake/Rebirth, and reliving a story that was a part of our childhoods with the original FFVII. And it was exactly that which motivated cosplayer adamilangley to impersonate one of the most loved characters in the franchise: Tifa Lockhart!

And speaking of Final Fantasy VII, our favorite Turk also showed up around there! dev1lm4n.cos, after being put under some slight pressure from friends to get in the FF hype train, got an old wig from another cosplay, a few articles of social clothing they already owned, some EVA foam and four days later, there was an incredible Reno walking around the convention center, looking for a bald partner to call theirs.

And to close this category off on a high note, we had Final Fantasy X! annrose81 has always loved the game series, has cosplayed every single version of Aerith and when FFX was released, fell in love with the story and everything about Yuna as a character, especially the sending ritual, and, 15 years ago, made the entire cosplay herself and still wears it today, just like her love for Yuna persists.

Persona

Among the several reasons why someone could decide to cosplay a character, one that happens quite frequently is identification with the character. And this was precisely what made annasperly decide to cosplay Futaba, due to seeing herself in the character and in her story, of being more recluse, chronically online and giving her all for her objectives!

The Witcher 3

Going through a tough moment in her personal life, zireael_cosplayer found in the game, something that has certainly also happened to all of us: a refuge, a place to escape from the problems, which ended up culminating in a strong connection to it, and especially to Ciri due to her determination and strong beliefs.

On the other hand, lua_romao found in another character someone to admire for her strength and determination, and to identify with: Yennefer, and was attending the saturday of the Gamescom Latam as the powerful witch.

Animal Crossing

Changing game styles a bit, this one was impossible not to stop and take a photo! In the words from the cosplayer herself, biatonicaa, who plays Animal Crossing and doesn’t like the incredibly cute Isabelle must be a sadist!

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Unexpectedly (or not, given that the event is called gamescom latam), we had an international encounter at gamescom latam! Chilean alesita_cosplay, on top of being extremely nice to us while we tried our best at our portunhol, was wearing an impressively detailed version of Aloy! She told us that she chose this cosplay because the design is wonderful, and the game is a lot of fun.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring cosplayers were certainly one of the biggest attractions in the convention, forming an endless line of people waiting to take a picture with them at the promo stand for the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree, but the cosplayers working there weren’t the only ones capturing attendee’s attention! carolmizuki was definitely standing out to every fan of the game with her Ranni the Witch! Complete with her 4 arms and the underside of her mushroom cap all lit up, she chose the character as she usually chooses her cosplays: Going for the visuals and striking traits, and for being strong, powerful characters.

Yakuza/Like a Dragon

After playing Yakuza Zero and getting to know the character’s past, falcon.cosplay simply thought that Goro Majima was too effing incredible not to be cosplayed!

Devil May Cry V

Who has never fallen in love with a character back in your childhood when playing a game which left a huge mark on you, and wanted to be them for a day? This was exactly what happened to mugi_well with Dante! And in the current day, he was able to make the cosplay he has always wanted, and feels very comfortable and at ease wearing it to conventions.

Undertale

Let’s go a bit more to the indie side now, since this was the one game which introduced kii.coscos to the indie game scene, and motivated his cosplay of the favorite TV star robot of the entire Underworld: Mettaton!

League of Legends

League is always a game which you are extremely likely to come across several cosplays from at any event, and gamescom latam wasn’t an exception! But among dozens of impeccable champions which looked straight out of the Rift to the corridors of São Paulo Expo, one caught our attention for the same reason why bigodecosplay (who, very fitting of his name which can be literally translated to mustachecosplay*, only cosplays characters with mustaches) chose the frejlordian: How many Braums have you seen carrying a proportionally sized door weighing 30kg have you seen around?!

Genshin Impact

Another tendency which grows increasingly in the corridors of the event centers are cosplays from Hoyoverse games, with their charming designs and huge gamer fanbase. Once again, among the several ones we encountered throughout gamescom latam, we spoke with three of them who told us a little bit about their special connection to the characters:

cosmoon.venus, for example, chose Beidou for being a strong character, a warrior, determined, and someone who was already powerful before getting her vision, and still is independent of it! The strong care and affection she has for the character were the main reasons for her cosplay choice.

sailor.keni on the other hand, chose to cosplay the Raiden Shogun because of her story, which in her own words is beautiful and touching, which involves being a boss in the game before becoming playable, and for her design, which is strongly based off the style of traditional japanese kimonos.

And speaking of Archons, thogoncalves was also representing one of them! In addition to nurturing a strong admiration for Zhongli and liking his story, he identifies himself a lot with the character, so cosplaying him was an easy decision.

The Legend of Zelda

Right out of one of the less known titles in the franchise, Spirit Tracks, the version of Princess Zelda cosplayed by lya.yuki was identical to the game in every last detail, reflecting her care towards the character who, in the game mentioned before, has a lot more personality and presence than in other titles, which motivated the choice.

With an impressive number of cosplays from the franchise under her belt, which clearly demonstrate her immense love for the games, layze_michelle was representing a character who she first got to know as a child in Breath of The Wild and met later on, grown up, in Tears of the Kingdom: The scientist Purah - another thing that the cosplayer loves when characters are.

The cosplayers _tatacos and buth_ were cosplaying the main couple, and moreover for a beautiful reason: The franchise means a lot to her, due to the memories of long gaming sessions with her brother who no longer lives in Brazil. In addition to being a couple in the game, they are a couple outside of it too, and they do several cosplays as a duo!

Little Nightmares

And speaking of cosplayer couples, another one who was causing lines to form to be photographed due to being so unique and detailed were kirakiridocosplay and azumicosplay, with their completely handmade costumes of the two protagonists of the Little Nightmares games! The choice was due to their shared love for the game's style: no speech, puzzle-based and with its dark atmosphere.

The Last of Us

Coming directly out not only from the games in this case, the trio bellie.cosplay, bishopispunk and that_strange_magician were representing the incredible franchise extremely well. Their reasons for choosing the character vary, though: For Ellie, it was because both games meant a lot to her, due to their unique and memorable story. For Joel from the series (on the right) they were also similar reasons, he was driven by his love for the franchise, but the fact that he is a look-alike of Pedro Pascal certainly made everything easier. As for Joel from the game (on the left), the reason was one that resonated very deeply: The desire to retire and not have any more obligations in life, besides drinking coffee and playing the guitar on a farm when we get old.

Street Fighter

And to close off our list, nothing more appropriate than a game which, definitely, even those who are not diehard fighting games fans have played at least once in their lives with their friends: Street Fighter.

And since it's a game that is played in groups, we brought three of them at once: akemy.sama, as Cammy, taking to another level the fact that she mains Cammy in the game and who chose this particular cosplay because she likes the character’s charisma (and the fact that she likes kittens, after all who doesn't like kittens??), alessandra.masuda as Sakura, who was chosen for being a happy character, someone who is always smiling and with whom the cosplayer not only identifies with, but also uses as a way of losing her shyness, “embodying” her personality, and ulissestakarada bringing to life the childhood icon of so many, Ryu, a cosplay chosen because of his admiration for the character's resilience and effort.

Wrapping Up

Cosplay is one of the coolest forms of art and demonstrations of love that a fan can do towards their favorite character, franchise or even person, and seeing the growing attention that conventions have had with this audience directly reflects the quantity and variety of incredible cosplays we see out there.

Comment below if there was any cosplay that we didn't meet, and you loved seeing there! And see you at the next event, where we hope to find even more of our favorite gaming characters brought to life!
