Final Fantasy XIV: Gathering System Guide

In this article, we explain the main mechanics used in item collection, how to get started, and what to do next to progress and improve.

Where to begin from?

Like the starting classes in the game, crafters have a skill tree and a guild, located in one of three main cities. Below is where each one is located:

Gridania: Botanist Guild in Old Gridania

Limsa Lominsa: Fishermen's Guild in the Lower Decks

Ul'dah: Miners' Guild in the Steps of Thal

Status

When equipping a gather class, always note its Gathering, Perception, and GP stats:

Gathering: defines your chance of successfully collecting a resource. The higher the level of the item youre going to collect, the more Gathering will be required to collect it;

Perception: defines the chance of activating the Gatherer's Boon, which causes one more item to be collected per gathering action; in simpler terms, it's your critical hit chance.

GP stands for Gatherer Points, which is the equivalent of "Mana". Many skills require you to spend some amount of Mana to execute them. Unlike Crafters, GPs don’t regenerate after collection.

Collecting with Botanist and Miner

With a gatherer in hand, you can start collecting resources. First, open your gathering log, usually located in your hotbar. If you can't find it, go to the Logs menu > Gathering Log. This is where you'll find the locations of most, but not all, of the resources that can be collected at your current level.

For example, here I opened the log and asked for the location of Copper Ore on the Western Thanalan map.

When you're in the area, look for those bright spots.

Once you interact with it, this menu will appear. This screen shows what can be collected from this node:

Integrity: Defines how many times this nodule can be collected before it disappears.

Below are the available items for collection. Picking up the first item, Muddy Water, the 100% at the top indicates a successful collection chance, and the 100% below indicates a chance of activating the Gatherer's Boon. In other words, if I collect it, I'm guaranteed to get 2 Muddy Water.

If your collection chance isn't 100%, the Gatherer's Boon buff won't activate!

The “Enable Quick Gathering” button will cause the character to use the gathering action until the node is empty, preventing you from using abilities between gatherings.

The nodule disappeared and there isn't another one nearby, what should I do?

Gathering Combos

Yes, even the gatherers in this game have a rotation, and it's important to have a basic understanding of how the skill works in order to adapt it to your equipment and levels.

For example, you can use Sharp Vision to maximize your chances of collecting and triggering the Gatherer's Boon.

Solid Reason can be used to extend the duration of a node, thereby adding more value to skills like King's Yield.

Collecting with Fisher

The Fisher is so unique that it has its own Log, located in the Logs > Fishing Log menu, and the Fishing Guide. It's like a sticker album that shows all the fish you've caught or still need to catch.

Unlike the Botanist and Miner, the Fisher's nodes don't appear on the map until you discover them.

To find out where to find the nodes, get close to a body of water, be it a river, pond or beach, and try fishing. After catching the first one, the location will appear in your Fishing Log.

Here are the fishing spots in Middle La Noscea.

Before setting off, remember to equip a lure using the level 1 skill, Bait.

I highly recommend that you come to this merchant and buy 10 Versatile Lures. They can be used for most fish and don't wear out with use. They only wear out when the fish takes the lure with it.

With the Fisher equipped and ready, let's go to a river.

As soon as you reach the edge, or stand in the river itself, use the Cast ability.

Once you do this, an animation will begin and fishing will start. To successfully catch fish, you must wait until an exclamation point appears above the character and then use the Hook skill. If your Gathering skill is high enough, the fish will be deposited into your inventory.

To get out of this fishing position, use the Quit skill.

Fishing Combos

The Fisher doesn't use the Gatherer's Boon system, but rather a "Large-sized fish" mechanic. Whenever you catch one, you gain a stack of Angler's Art, used for various abilities. If you quit the fishing stance, the Angler's Art stacks are lost.

Patience and Patience II are the skills focused on catching "Large-sized Fish". When activated, they will greatly reduce your chance of catching the fish, however, you will have access to two skills: Powerful Hookset and Precision Hookset. They cost 50 GP each and negate the Patience debuff if used on the correct fish.

I've never caught the fish, how am I supposed to know which one is the right one?

How to level up efficiently?

It all depends on where you are in the main story, aka MSQ, and how much you're willing to spend. The methods below are cumulative, meaning doing one doesn't prevent you from doing another.

Ocean Fishing - Fisher Exclusive

This deep-sea fishing game works more or less like a raid, but for anglers. In it, you'll have 7 minutes to score as many points as possible in 3 different locations around Eorzea, traveling from Costa Del Sol to the cold coast of Coerthas.

To gain access to this instance, simply complete the mission All the Fish in the Sea

, located in the fishermen's guild in the Lower Decks of Limsa Lominsa.

After completing this, the instance can be accessed at the pier in the far west of the Lower Decks, near the wizards' guild.

Tips for Ocean Fishing

The boats for Ocean Fishing depart every odd-numbered hour in real life and are available for access for 20 minutes. I recommend going to the pier 5 minutes beforehand. You'll know the instance is available when an exclamation mark appears on the NPC.

Depending on weather conditions, locations visited, and other players, the trip may yield more or fewer points, so always have your best equipment and some bottles of Cordial or Hi-Cordial;

Before setting off on your journey, make sure you have at least 20 free inventory slots and, whenever possible, sell or discard the fish so they don't clutter your inventory. These fish aren’t worth gil, so you can sell them to the NPC without worry;

During your travels, an event called Spectral Current may occur once per stop. During a two-minute window, all fish caught will yield significantly more points, so always maintain a reserve of "mana" to use your abilities and increase your points.

Always try to complete the side quests that appear in a window during the activity. They’re simple things like "Catch X fish with !". This means your team needs to catch X amount of fish with a "!". Skills like Identical Cast and Slap Surface are great for manipulating your chances of catching what you want.

MSQ Level 30

It's around this level that you already have access to most of the base game maps and access to the Grand Companies. At your Grand Company HQ, you can deliver certain items daily, and they offer massive amounts of XP, especially if you have the daily bonus. You can see what your Grand Company needs by accessing the Duty > Timers > Next Mission Allowance menu.

Here the daily bonus is in the Fisher delivery.

With the item in hand, simply go to HQ and speak to the NPC Personnel Officer and select the first option:

Speak to the Personnel Officer and arrange deliveries via Undertake Supply and Provisioning Missions.

MSQ Level 50 and base ARR completed

Here you have access to the Ixals, a beast tribe that offers daily crafting quests in the North Shroud area. To unlock them, simply complete the side quest A Bad Bladder. (https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/A_Bad_Bladder) and its subsequent quest.

MSQ Level 60 and base Heavensward completed

From here, you have access to an alternative method through the Ishgardian Restoration. To do this, complete the quest Towards the Firmament

to gain access to the gatherers' delivery area.

Once there, seek access to The Diadem by speaking to Aurvael inside the Firmament. In this area, you can collect and then exchange points that can be redeemed for Glamours, mounts, and other cosmetics in the Firmament.

Collectibles

These are slightly more advanced collectibles, which you exchange for Scripts, the Gatherers' equivalent of the Tomestone of Poetics. These collectibles require you to gather them with a minimum quality; that is, items below this minimum cannot be exchanged for scripts. As before, let's separate the Fisher from the others.

Botanist and Miner

The minimum requirements for Botanist and Miner collections can be seen in

The small box on the right that shows the values that are worth focusing on acquiring.

On this screen, the Gatherer's Boon buff still applies, but in a different way. Here it causes your actions that increase collectability to generate more points.

From there, it's up to you to test and see what the most viable score is for your equipment. If you're farming, for example, if you use too many points on one node, you'll run out of GP for the next one. It's preferable to find a middle ground.

Fisher

The Fisher is a bit simpler. Just activate the Collect skill at level 50 and use Cast in an area that has a collectible fish. Its collectability will depend on its size, so it's good to use Patience buffs and similar abilities to catch the one with the highest score.

Advanced Tips

In your Grand Company, by speaking with the Quartermaster, you can purchase a training manual containing Company Seals. They offer significant XP boosts for a very affordable price.

There are variations of this buff at higher levels as well!

If you need a boost to your stats to gather resources, you can use food for that. It offers a small boost, but it can be the difference between spending 30 minutes or 10 minutes gathering.

When acquiring Scripts, the first thing I recommend buying are the Tomes of Regional Folklore. These are what unlock access to rare nodes containing materials for more advanced crafting.
