No Man's Sky is a 2016 exploration and survival game by Hello Games, set in a procedurally generated universe of planets, star systems, space travel, resource gathering, crafting, and combat.

Edit reference

No Man’s Sky is a science-fiction exploration game developed and published by Hello Games, the British studio founded by Sean Murray. It launched for PlayStation 4 and Windows on August 9, 2016, after years of ambitious promotion that presented its universe as almost impossibly large. The game uses procedural generation to create planets, animals, plants, minerals, starships, and landscapes from mathematical rules rather than storing every location individually. Hello Games has described the universe as containing 18 quintillion possible planets, generated from a fixed seed.

The player begins as an Atlas Traveller who awakens beside a damaged starship on an unfamiliar planet. The immediate objectives are practical: repair the ship, gather resources, construct technology, and leave the starting world. From there, players can follow several connected narrative paths, including the Atlas storyline and the investigation surrounding Artemis. The central mystery concerns the nature of the universe, the Atlas, and the simulation-like reality inhabited by its travelers. The game’s lore also introduces the Korvax, Gek, and Vy’keen, three major alien civilizations with distinct histories, languages, and relationships.

Resources are collected with the Mining Beam, while technology can be installed in an exosuit, starship, multitool, freighter, or exocraft. Players may trade commodities, discover and rename locations, learn alien words, fight space pirates and Sentinels, salvage abandoned freighters, or simply travel between systems. A player can own and manage a freighter, establish planetary bases, recruit frigates for expeditions, and maintain settlements. Multiplayer allows visitors to share a universe, cooperate on missions, and explore together, although the world remains shaped primarily by procedural systems.

The game’s troubled release became an important part of its history. Several promised features, especially multiplayer functionality, were absent or limited at launch, and the initial reception was sharply negative. Hello Games responded with a long sequence of substantial free updates rather than paid expansions. Foundation added base building in 2016; Atlas Rises expanded the story in 2017; NEXT introduced a much larger multiplayer experience in 2018; and Beyond broadened online features in 2019. Later updates added features such as living ships, settlements, improved space combat, underwater exploration, expeditions, and virtual-reality support.

No Man’s Sky is therefore notable not only for its procedural galaxy, but also for its unusual post-release transformation. Its continuing development turned a heavily criticized launch into one of the most extensive recovery stories in modern game history.
