The United States Senate has opened an investigation into Roblox, focusing on the game creation platform’s child safety policies. Senators Josh Hawley, a Republican, and Richard J. Durbin, a Democrat, sent a letter to CEO David Baszucki requesting company documents and records by August 31.

Hawley chairs the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, while Durbin is the committee’s ranking Democratic member. In the letter, the senators say Roblox promotes the platform as a safe digital environment for children as young as five, but raise questions about that promise.

The senators accuse the company of prioritizing revenue and engagement metrics over children’s safety and well-being. The document cites allegations that the platform has been used to exchange child sexual abuse material, facilitate sexually explicit and violent virtual experiences, extort users and groom minors for in-person meetings.

The investigation also notes that Roblox reported 65.381 suspected cases of child sexual exploitation to the United States National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2025. According to the letter, that figure is more than double the number recorded the previous year.

The requested information includes Roblox’s earnings by age group, from five-year-old users to people aged 50 or older, as well as the daily and weekly time those groups spend on the platform. The committee also wants to know what percentage of users under 18 have parental supervision enabled on their accounts.

The senators are seeking details on the use of automated safety tools, including how many reports related to child exploitation, predation or abuse underwent human review between 2023 and 2025. Another question concerns why the new age-verification settings do not apply to custom chats created within games.

The list also includes documents on parental controls, the tracking of predators who use multiple accounts and Roblox’s annual spending on trust and safety between 2018 and 2025.
