Sam Barlow unveils sci-fi horror game Precognition

The creator of Immortality and Her Story has announced Precognition, a sci-fi horror game in which players manipulate memories of the future to change what happens.

Precognition is the new game from Sam Barlow, creator of Her Story and Immortality, developed in partnership with studio Half Mermaid. The project has been described as a sci-fi horror game and is scheduled to launch in spring 2028 as one of the first games published under the new label from Kinetic, the company behind Phasmophobia.

As in Barlow's previous work, the experience revolves around investigating video footage. This time, however, the material contains Diana's future memories. The protagonist has received an experimental implant capable of generating visions of events that have not yet happened.

Diana can focus on specific moments in these visions and store them in her memory. This creates a butterfly effect: by recording a scene from the future, she changes what happens and receives a new vision. The player decides which pieces of information are important enough to send back, gradually building an inventory of alternate futures.

Barlow compared the mechanic to the film Memento, in which the protagonist uses Polaroid photographs to preserve information. In Precognition, Diana collects images of her own future. The power could be used to find lottery numbers, but it can also expose more personal secrets, such as a betrayal involving her partner and her brother.

During a question-and-answer session, Barlow explained that Diana was a child prodigy with a photographic memory and a highly malleable brain. The experiment was designed to enhance or repair memory, but revealed that the implants could also transmit memories from the future. Other people quickly forget what they see; Diana does not.

The story is being co-developed by Brandon Cronenberg, director of Infinity Pool, Possessor and Antiviral, who also co-wrote the script with Barlow. Precognition is in development for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and Switch 2.
