Activision has confirmed it will remove real footage of the Itaewon tragedy in South Korea from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The company also apologized to the victims’ families. In a statement, it said the footage would be removed entirely in an update scheduled for November 12.

The footage appears in the game’s opening cinematic, which uses news clips to depict fictional civilian casualties during a North Korean invasion of South Korea. But some of the clips show the 2022 Itaewon disaster, in which about 160 people died. An association representing the victims’ families and the Citizens Countermeasure Meeting called for the footage to be removed.

In its statement, Activision expressed solidarity with the families and victims affected by the footage’s inclusion. The company said Modern Warfare 4 is a work of fiction and that, in using real news footage, it had not intended to evoke or trivialize the Itaewon tragedy or any similar event.

The matter also reached the South Korean government. At a press conference, Interior and Safety Minister Yun Ho-jung described the use of the footage as causing further harm to those affected by the tragedy and called for appropriate sanctions. He said the relevant authorities would decide whether to impose a penalty or restrict access to the game.

Activision said the footage will be removed through a game update.
