2K Creates Studio That Could Challenge EA Sports FC in Soccer

2K Sports has announced the creation of Small Axe Studios, a new development studio based in Vancouver, Canada. The team will be led by Aaron McHardy, a former FIFA executive producer who spent 17 years at EA, most of them working on the soccer series.

McHardy left EA in 2023 and introduced Small Axe in a LinkedIn post. According to him, the studio will work alongside 2K to create the company's next AAA sports game. The executive also explained that the name Small Axe represents the idea that a small axe can bring down a great tree through vision, ambition and focus.

In a statement on the same social network, 2K said Small Axe grew out of the 2K Sports Lab, a project created several years ago to explore the future of sports games. The company described the new studio as a combination of the dedication of a startup team and 2K's resources, with the goal of building its “next major sports franchise”.

The company cited its experience with NBA 2K, WWE 2K and PGA TOUR 2K as the foundation for the project. Job listings on the Small Axe Studios website mention the creation of an “exceptional and player-focused experience from the very beginning”, but reveal no details about the game.

There is still no confirmation that the project will be a soccer title. The possibility has gained traction because 2K already covers basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, tennis and wrestling, leaving soccer and American football among the major sports segments still available to the company.

The FIFA series, now known as EA Sports FC, has not faced major annual competition in soccer since its rivalry with Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer began to fade. The Japanese company continues to support eFootball, the successor to PES, but 2K has yet to announce the genre, platforms or release date for Small Axe's game.
