Reviews for Marvel's Wolverine have begun to arrive, with Insomniac Games' title holding a 77 on Metacritic from just over 100 reviews. The platform classifies the score as "generally favorable," but it falls below the standard typically associated with Sony's major studios.

A score of 77 does not place Wolverine among poor games. However, the response takes on a different meaning when the title is compared with PlayStation Studios' track record this generation. Sony's leading in-house studios include Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio, Sucker Punch and Insomniac Games itself.

Among games developed by Sony-owned studios, Marvel's Wolverine ranks among the lowest-rated first-party PS5 releases of the generation. The comparison changes when all Sony-published PS5 exclusives are included: Destruction AllStars and God of War: Sons of Sparta score below Wolverine.

The result also marks a significant drop for Insomniac. Marvel's Spider-Man 2, released in 2023, reached 90 on Metacritic. Four years later, Wolverine arrives with a 77, ending a run in which the studio had not released a game rated below 85 throughout the generation.

Insomniac has also released more titles than any other Sony-owned developer over the past seven years. Wolverine's performance therefore stands out as an anomaly for a team accustomed to stronger review scores.

The score could still change as more reviews are added, while player reception will shape perceptions of the game over time. For now, Marvel's Wolverine remains at 77 on Metacritic, below Marvel's Spider-Man 2's 90.
