Four Google AI agents defeated the Ender Dragon in Minecraft after more than 27 hours of play, with no human intervention during the game. The result appears in a paper published by company researchers, who say it is the first known autonomous completion of the game by AI agents.

The group started in a randomly generated world with one goal: defeat the final boss. The researchers did not assign roles or devise a strategy for the team. Each agent controlled a player through the open-source Mineflayer library, coordinating through in-game chat and shared memory.

The agents divided up the work as they went. Some built shelters to take on Endermen and gather materials; others searched for food or explored the map. They also shared combat tips and helped teammates recover equipment lost after they died.

Reaching the End took about 13 and a half hours. The rest of the time went to fighting the Ender Dragon. Over the course of the game, the four agents sent 229 messages, ran 2.783 programs and died 605 times. A fifth agent monitored the attempt to check that the AI-controlled players were not cheating.

According to the researchers, the agents planned, wrote and debugged their own programs. The human team could watch the game in real time and stop it, but did not need to intervene. The experiment used 1,35 billion input tokens, an amount that would cost an ordinary user about US$ 1.620.

For Google, the point of the test goes beyond beating Minecraft. The researchers want to study how agents work together, recover from setbacks and stick to a plan for more than a day—abilities they consider necessary for collaborating with people on real-world tasks.
