Minecraft began as “Cave Game,” a browser prototype created by Swedish programmer Markus Persson, known as Notch. On May 17, 2009, Persson released an early public version on the TIGSource forums, where its block-building concept quickly attracted players. The game was initially developed by Persson’s company Mojang Specifications, later renamed Mojang. Its paid alpha began in June 2010, and beta followed in December 2010. Minecraft officially launched for Windows, macOS, and Linux on November 18, 2011, during MineCon in Las Vegas. Rather than supplying a scripted campaign, Minecraft gives players procedurally generated worlds composed of cubic blocks. In Survival mode, players gather resources, craft tools, manage health and hunger, and confront hostile mobs such as zombies, skeletons, creepers, and Endermen. Daylight and darkness shape danger: most hostile overworld mobs spawn in low light, while players can build shelters and illuminate areas with torches. Creative mode provides unrestricted building materials and flight, emphasizing construction rather than survival pressures. Redstone is a mineral. It enables circuits used for doors, traps, farms, calculators, and other player-built devices. Minecraft’s central progression leads to the Nether, a hazardous dimension entered through an obsidian portal, and eventually to the End. There, players may battle the Ender Dragon, the game’s original final boss, after locating a stronghold and activating an End Portal with Eyes of Ender. Defeating the dragon produces credits and allows access to outer End islands through a gateway. The End also contains cities and ships. which can contain valuable loot, including elytra, wing-like equipment that lets a player glide. Minecraft became a major commercial success before its official release. Mojang announced in June 2011 that sales had passed 10 million copies. Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property in September 2014 for US$2.5 billion. Persson, Carl Manneh, and Jakob Porsér left after the acquisition. Under Microsoft, Minecraft continued receiving large free updates and expanded across consoles, mobile devices, and other platforms. The Bedrock Edition supports cross-platform multiplayer among many supported devices, while Java Edition remains the original PC version and has its own modding ecosystem. Minecraft: Pocket Edition launched for Xperia Play in 2011, later evolving into Bedrock Edition. A separate educational version, Minecraft Education, is designed for classroom use. Minecraft has also inspired spin-offs: Minecraft Dungeons, an action role-playing game released in 2020, and Minecraft Legends, a 2023 action-strategy game. In October 2023, Mojang announced that Minecraft had sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling video game ever by reported sales. Its cultural reach includes MineCon events, community-made mods, multiplayer servers, and adaptations such as the 2025 feature film A Minecraft Movie, released by Warner Bros. Pictures. Minecraft was created using Java for its original edition, and its distinctive visual identity centers on deliberately low-resolution textures and block-based landscapes. Updates have added biomes, villages, oceans, caves, mountains, archaeology, and the Deep Dark, home to the Warden. Its continuing development reflects Mojang Studios’ stewardship.
