Among the many characters in Resident Evil, none have achieved the popularity and prominence that Leon S. Kennedy possesses. Initially introduced in the franchise as an inexperienced young police officer, over the years he has become one of the main agents fighting bioterrorism in the series' universe.

Leon's evolution directly mirrors the growth of the franchise itself, transitioning from classic survival horror to global stories involving biological terrorism, government conspiracies, and criminal organizations.
Leon's journey is marked by unforgettable moments, and all his appearances in the series' universe are remembered by fans. From the Raccoon City incident to international operations against viral threats, the character has built one of the most consistent and popular narratives in the Resident Evil saga.
In this article, we’ll recap Leon's trajectory throughout the games, focusing more on his character development than on the games' narratives themselves, to illustrate how Leon's journey is intimately linked to the trajectory of this franchise and why he has become such an important character.
Origins and Early Career
Born in 1977, Leon had a troubled childhood with his family, who had criminal connections. This led the young man to pursue a career as a police officer, trying to avoid the fate his family suffered and vowing to help people.
At 21, as soon as he graduated from the academy, the young police officer applied for a position in the Raccoon City Police Department, interested in the strange disappearances and murders occurring in the region.
Resident Evil 2
Shortly after being accepted for the position he applied for, in September 1998, Leon traveled to Raccoon City, arriving there on the 29th, without any idea of the chaos that had taken over the city.

Soon after arriving in the city and realizing the situation, he encounters another survivor, Claire Redfield, who was searching for her brother Chris. The two join forces to escape the city while confronting biological weapons and discovering the extent of Umbrella's conspiracy.
It’s during the Raccoon City incident that Leon meets another very important character in his story, Ada Wong. Ada is a mysterious woman who appears as just another survivor, but who soon begins to reveal her connections to everything that happens in the city and, especially, to Umbrella.
Ada later reveals herself to be a spy who was only using the young police officer, but the connection that takes shape between the two marks Leon's entire journey in the games that would be released later.
Resident Evil 4
After surviving and escaping Raccoon City, Leon pursues a career, achieving the rank of federal agent, working in US national security due to his experience with biological terrorism. He’s then sent to investigate the kidnapping of the president's daughter, Ashley Graham, who’s being held by a group called Los Illuminados.

His investigation leads him to a village in the Spanish countryside, where he discovers a kind of fanatical cult organized by a man named Osmund Saddler, involving a new type of organism, different from the viruses he was used to: the Las Plagas, parasites that control the host and transform it into monstrous abominations.
The agent faces numerous dangers to rescue Ashley and once again relies on the interference of Ada, who reappears here as a spy for Albert Wesker in search of a sample of Las Plagas.
Leon defeats the leader of Los Illuminados and saves the president's daughter, becoming even more important and achieving new honors for his career. It’s also in Resident Evil 4 that the franchise undergoes a major shift, moving away from survival horror and closer to action, a change that also greatly marks this character.
Movies
There are also some canonical films that feature Agent Kennedy, narrating events that occur between RE4 and RE6.

The crucial point of the movies is the character's evolution over the years fighting biological weapons and bioterrorism around the world. Leon reunites with old allies during his journey, especially Claire Redfield, with whom he has a sincere friendship. However, the character's psychological decline becomes increasingly evident, as we see Leon becoming more sullen, withdrawn, and falling into alcoholism.
Resident Evil 6
In the sixth chapter of the main saga, Leon, now even more experienced as a government agent, faces a terrorist attack that leads to the death of the US president. He then joins forces with Helena Harper, an American secret service agent searching for her missing sister, and together they try to unravel a global conspiracy involving a new mutagenic virus and a new infection.

Several other characters from the franchise make an appearance in the title, with memorable moments involving Leon, such as a hand-to-hand fight against Chris Redfield, from which neither emerges victorious, and his reunion with Ada.
RE6 highlights the more human side of the character, showing the consequences of years of witnessing death and horror in his fight against bioterrorism.
Requiem
In RE9: Requiem, Leon Scott Kennedy returns once again as one of the playable characters, this time much older, sharing the spotlight with Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst investigating her mother's murder.

Leon and Grace must confront Raccoon City's disturbing past together and survive once again the horrors created by Umbrella.
In Requiem, we see Leon in his fifties, married—as can be seen by the ring he wears.
Ada Wong
One of the most important aspects of Leon is his ambiguous relationship with Ada Wong. Despite frequently being on opposite sides, as discussed earlier, a strong emotional connection exists between them.
Ada represents both trust and manipulation. Leon knows she has ulterior motives, but continues to show genuine concern for her at different points in the franchise, and this dynamic has become one of the most iconic relationships in the Resident Evil series.

In Requiem, many fans theorize that he married Ada, a theory that wouldn't be so impossible considering their history. The truth is that Ada represents the faith that Leon has in people, a faith that endures even after he becomes more pessimistic over the years.
Final Thoughts
The Resident Evil franchise has always had great protagonists, even in the less popular games. However, none of them have become as iconic and beloved by the fan community as Leon. This phenomenon of popularity is due to the fact that the policeman is present in all phases of the saga, in the most important moments: the classic beginning, the transition to action, and the reinvention of the saga in Requiem.
Leon is the poster boy for Resident Evil, being himself an icon of what the franchise represents: one of the greatest sagas in gaming, a timeless classic. No matter how old he gets, he’ll always have a place in the memory and hearts of gamers.
