Double Fine Keeps Psychonauts and Prepares Kickstarter

Independent from Xbox, Double Fine will retain ownership of Psychonauts and fund its next game with a new edition of Amnesia Fortnight.

Double Fine Productions has returned to operating as an independent studio after separating from Xbox, and will retain the rights to every game it has produced. The list includes Psychonauts, Kiln, Keeper, Costume Quest, Brutal Legends and other projects.

Microsoft will also transfer the publishing rights for these titles to the developer. As a result, revenue from sales will go directly to Double Fine. Some games will continue to display Microsoft’s name for a while as the transfer process is completed.

The information was confirmed by Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Daily podcast. “Some of them will still say ‘Microsoft,’ but that’s because it takes some time to process. When people buy our games, they’re supporting the studio,” he explained.

Without announcing a new major project, the studio is preparing a new edition of Amnesia Fortnight to determine its next steps. The initiative is an internal game jam that will present four prototypes developed live for the public. Only one of the ideas will be selected to become a full game.

The event begins on 31 August and is expected to continue throughout September. After the selection, Double Fine plans to use Kickstarter to fund development of the winning idea with support from the public. 2 Player Productions will document the process and turn the production into a new documentary.

The company has already opened a page on the platform, but has not yet disclosed the financial goal or campaign amounts. Double Fine previously turned to Kickstarter to fund Broken Age and later raised US$ 3.3 million on Fig to produce Psychonauts 2, its highest-rated game and also its best-selling title.
