Edit reference

Resident Evil Code: Veronica is a survival-horror game developed and published by Capcom. It first launched for Sega Dreamcast in Japan in February 2000, followed by North American and European releases that year. Although its title omits a numbered sequel designation, Capcom treated it as a major continuation of the Resident Evil storyline, rather than a side story. It was the first series entry to use fully polygonal, real-time 3D environments instead of the pre-rendered backgrounds associated with the earlier PlayStation games. Set three months after Resident Evil 2, the game begins with Claire Redfield searching for her brother Chris at Umbrella's Paris facilities. Captured during the operation, Claire is sent to Rockfort Island, a prison and Umbrella installation. A viral outbreak, triggered amid an attack on the island, releases infected prisoners and Bio Organic Weapons. Claire escapes alongside teenager Steve Burnside, while the narrative also follows Chris after he receives a message from Leon S. Kennedy and travels to find her. Rockfort's commander Alfred Ashford and his sister Alexia belong to the Ashford family, one of Umbrella's founding houses. Alfred pursues Claire and Steve, while Alexia is revealed to have survived in Antarctica after infecting herself with the t-Veronica virus and entering cryogenic sleep for fifteen years. Her plan to control the virus is central to the game's final conflict. Wesker, absent from the main numbered games since the original Resident Evil, returns as an operative seeking the t-Veronica virus for a rival organization. Gameplay retains exploration, item management, puzzles, and limited ammunition, but its moving camera could track characters through 3D spaces. The Dreamcast edition used visual memory unit features, including health display information. An expanded PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast version, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, appeared in 2001; it added cutscenes, notably material involving Wesker. Capcom later released Code: Veronica X for GameCube in 2003 and PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as downloadable versions in 2011. The game remains notable for advancing the Redfield siblings' story, establishing Alexia Ashford, and restoring Wesker to a prominent antagonistic role. It was directed by Hiroki Katoh, with scenario work credited to Noboru Sugimura and Flagship. Unlike the original Code: Veronica, Veronica X includes additional prominent scenes involving Wesker and a revised ending scene. Claire, Chris, Steve, Alfred, and Alexia all appear in the game's intertwined Rockfort and Antarctic episodes that form its principal settings across much of the adventure's two-disc campaign.
