Reports on social media indicate that some PlayStation 5 console boxes have started to receive a notice about the future of physical media on the platform. The message states that, starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games will be sold only in digital format, both on the PlayStation Store and in physical stores.The text also clarifies that discs released before that date may continue to be played on the console. In other words, the change described does not prevent the use of the existing physical library, but signals a transition for upcoming releases.Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games would be digital. One of the stickers was shared on August 5, on the back of a PS5 box. It was not possible to identify whether the model shown was the Digital Edition or the version with a disc drive.However, the notice does not appear to be limited to one type of device. A post on BlueSky showed the same message accompanying the online purchase of a disc drive for the PS5 Digital. At the same time, there are indications that the stickers have not yet reached all regions or shipments: PS5 disc, Digital, and standalone disc-drive boxes did not display the notice during a check carried out at a store.The possibility of ending the production of physical discs has been prompting negative reactions among players and broadening the debate around preservation, ownership, and access to games. Sony had already acknowledged that there are strong opinions surrounding the transition.During a Q&A session for investors at the end of July, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said the company had considered the matter and would proceed cautiously. “When we think about the future—and we dedicate a great deal of time and thought to it—we consider the matter carefully, reach this conclusion, and will move forward cautiously.”- Lin TaoTao also said that Sony is working to engage players in a future digital ecosystem.
