State of Decay 3 was showcased in a 30-minute playable demo at gamescom 2026 while still in the early alpha stage. The preview highlighted improvements to weapon combat, movement and systems that add depth to survivor community management.

Base building and management remain central to the experience, but facilities will feature branching upgrade paths. Rather than progressing linearly, buildings can be specialized for specific roles. The choice of who works at each facility will also matter more: survivors with medical-related traits, for example, can speed up the recovery of others.

Procedurally generated characters will have traits and quirks that can evolve. One survivor shown in the demo took long showers, consuming more of the community's water, but was effective in melee combat. Another had sharpshooter training, dealing extra damage with long-range weapons and headshots, but was more easily injured.

The injury system now accounts for specific body parts and applies penalties to functions such as accuracy and movement speed. With more than 30 characters to manage, these attributes should influence both who heads out to face zombies and who stays behind to work at the base.

In the open world, infestation networks spread across the map and reach neighboring towns. Contaminated settlements and plague nests will serve as strategic points for halting this advance, in encounters that can escalate into larger-scale battles.

Each infestation has a heart, which may be hidden beneath a facility, in the garage of a workshop or in more elaborate dungeon-like areas. To destroy it, players must find four weak points throughout the location. When the heart is exposed, an even larger horde attacks, with bloaters and juggernauts adding to the threat.

The demo also showed an AK-47 with a drum magazine being used against crowds, a silenced pistol for headshots and ways to lure zombies into pools of flammable oil.
