The third season of The Last of Us could indeed be the final chapter of HBO’s adaptation. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said he believes showrunner Craig Mazin has planned the upcoming batch of episodes as the series’ conclusion.“I think Craig is planning this as the final season,” Bloys said when discussing the production’s plans. HBO has confirmed that the third season is scheduled for 2027, but has not yet announced a specific premiere date.His comments reinforce earlier signals from the network. In January, when asked whether the third season would wrap up the story, Bloys said that seemed likely, although the final decision rested with the showrunners.The situation contrasts with a statement Craig Mazin made in May 2025. At the time, the series creator said it would not be possible to conclude the story in a third season and that a fourth would be the most likely ending. Bloys’ more recent position, however, suggests the plans may have changed since then.The third season was announced before the second had even premiered. The series adapts Naughty Dog’s franchise and will move forward without Neil Druckmann’s direct involvement at the level he had in previous seasons, after the studio head scaled back his role in the HBO production.Druckmann said Naughty Dog remains in charge of the franchise and has The Last of Us projects in development, though he did not specify what they are. Meanwhile, the studio is focused on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, whose performance-capture filming was completed in August.
