Niftski completed the NES version of Super Mario Bros. in 4 minutes, 54 seconds and 482 milliseconds in the Any% category. The American player's run was streamed live on Twitch and presented as a new world record. But the reported times raise a question: the previous record attributed to average11 is 4 minutes, 54 seconds and 56 milliseconds, a faster time than Niftski's.

Those figures alone do not confirm that the record was broken. Niftski had little room for improvement in his run: he lost two frames in stage 8-4 after missing the entrance to a pipe. In a contest decided by fractions of a second, even that slip matters.

The Any% category measures how quickly a player can finish the game. According to Speedrun.com, the Super Mario Bros. leaderboard includes more than 2,000 players, and speedrunners have made more than 10,000 attempts. Competition is so tight that the best human times are approaching those achieved in TAS, or computer-assisted runs. According to speedrunning experts cited in the published information, the best human time is just 15 frames away from the theoretical perfect time.

Niftski had held the top spot for four years before average11 took over. In the original NES version of Super Mario Bros., the American ranks first in every category listed on Speedrun.com. He also holds records in all three categories for the Japanese game known as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, including Any%.

His record also extends to Super Mario Bros. 3: Niftski ranks 11th worldwide in the Any% No Wrong Warp category, with a time of 10 minutes, 46 seconds and 516 milliseconds.
