The PvP multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II on PC will no longer be released. Its creator, known as Speclizer, said he received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the project not be made public.

In a social media post, the modder said the project had been in development since January and was scheduled for release this month. Sony’s request ended the project before it could debut. Speclizer described the situation as sad and said he plans to move on to another original project.

The mod aimed to add multiplayer matches to the 2020 game on PC. In June, Speclizer released 25 minutes of gameplay footage showing the project in action.

Development also included a paid component through Patreon. No details were disclosed about the full content that would have been offered or about the letter received by the creator.

The cancellation is particularly disappointing for those hoping for a new multiplayer experience in the The Last of Us universe. Naughty Dog itself cancelled its official online project set in the series, The Last of Us Online, in late 2023.

At the time, the studio explained that releasing the game would have required it to devote its resources to post-launch content for years, limiting its ability to produce future single-player titles. Following the cancellation, former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida said he had played the project and found the experience “great.”

Vinit Agarwal, director of The Last of Us Online, also said former colleagues still write to him to say it was “the best multiplayer game they’ve ever played.”
