Jagex announced a fourth MMO in the RuneScape franchise during RuneFest in Birmingham, England. The project is still in the early stages of development and is not expected to launch for several years. For now, the studio is using RS4 as a working title, as the official name has yet to be decided.

Built in Unreal Engine, the new MMO will take players back to Gielinor. The goal is to combine the depth, freedom and community-driven spirit that have defined RuneScape for 25 years with new possibilities in technology and game design.

Jagex said RS4 will not replace RuneScape, Old School RuneScape or RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Each game will continue to be handled by a dedicated team and receive its own investment. The idea is for the new project to serve as an additional experience within the universe, allowing players to stay with one title, move between several or explore Gielinor through RS4.

The story will take place during the Sixth Age and begin in Ashenfall, a region northeast of Gielinor that was previously introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The events of RS4 will unfold years after the destruction of Dragon Queen Kuldra. Ashenfall will have changed over time, but Jagex plans to expand the adventure into other familiar areas as well as new locations and stories.

To develop the project, the company plans to build on the technology created for Dragonwilds and the community co-development model used in RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. Jagex says more than 300 million player accounts have been created across the franchise since its original launch 25 years ago.

The company also announced that development has begun on an animated adaptation of RuneScape, produced in partnership with YouTuber Charlie White, known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and Los Angeles-based production company Lyrical Media.
