Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, said he did everything he could to ensure the series' next chapter received a physical release. The game will be available on disc, but the included media will not contain all the content needed to play the full experience.

In an interview with Radio Times, Hamaguchi explained that he has a personal connection to physical media. He said he bought many disc editions as a child and still seeks out physical versions of titles to which he feels particularly attached. According to the director, the issue has become especially sensitive in recent months.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released on April 8, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. On consoles, players who insert the physical copy will still need to download a considerable portion of the game. The included disc will be a “key disc” containing only the opening section of the title.

Hamaguchi said he understands fans who have adopted the motto “no disc, no purchase.” He also explained that his responsibilities concern the game's content and quality, while decisions about products, commercial editions and distribution are handled by the publishing team. As a result, his authority in the process is limited.

Even so, the director said he pushed for a physical edition as much as possible. Internal negotiations and talks with console manufacturers resulted in a disc being included with the release.

Hamaguchi hopes physical media will continue to exist in some form, but considers it possible that the near future will bring boxes containing only a code printed on paper. Sony has announced that it will end production of discs for PlayStation games starting in January 2028, while keeping retail sales going without physical media.
