The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered revisits Bethesda Game Studios’ 2006 role-playing game with substantially rebuilt visuals and updated presentation. Developed by Virtuos in collaboration with Bethesda, the remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 rather than the original Gamebryo technology. It launched on April 22, 2025, for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and was also available through Xbox Game Pass. The project preserves the original game’s setting, story, quests, and open-world structure while refreshing its graphics, character models, environments, animations, and interface. The story begins with the player imprisoned in an Imperial City jail. Emperor Uriel Septim VII, voiced by Patrick Stewart, arrives while fleeing assassins and reveals that the player shares a mysterious dream with him. After the emperor is killed, he entrusts the protagonist with the Amulet of Kings. Its loss threatens the barriers separating Tamriel from the realm of Oblivion, and the player must help Martin Septim, a priest in Kvatch and the emperor’s illegitimate son. Martin becomes central to the effort to stop Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedric Prince whose invasion drives the main crisis. Cyrodiil contains the Imperial City and the provinces’ major guild organizations, each offering a separate career path. Joining the Fighters Guild leads to contracts and an internal conflict involving the Blackwood Company. The Mages Guild storyline concerns access to the Arcane University and the consequences of magical ambition. The Dark Brotherhood begins after the player kills an innocent person and develops into a conspiracy involving Lucien Lachance and the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. The Thieves Guild campaign follows the Grey Fox and a long effort to recover the Cowl of Nocturnal. The Arena in the Imperial City provides a structured route from recruit to champion. The remaster also includes the Shivering Isles expansion, which transports the player to the realm ruled by Sheogorath. Its divided lands, Mania and Dementia, and its story about the approaching Greymarch distinguish it from the base game. Knights of the Nine content is included as well, adding a religious questline centered on the Crusader’s relics and the Ayleid ruin of Garlas Malatar. Oblivion Remastered is therefore both a technical reconstruction and a preservation of a particular 2006 design: a voiced, quest-heavy fantasy world where the player can become an Imperial champion, guild leader, assassin, thief, or savior of Cyrodiil while pursuing the same character across all of those roles.
