Warlock is a new Dungeons & Dragons RPG from developers who previously worked on Far Cry, Watch Dogs and Splinter Cell. The game takes players to Darkon, a Domain of Dread shrouded in mist, for an open-world adventure focused on collecting and creatively using spells.

The protagonist is Kaatri, a weapons master who allies herself with the ancient witch queen Tasha early in the story. Tasha grants the character magical powers, though that assistance comes at a price. She will also be voiced by the actress behind Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village.

The arsenal includes familiar D&D spells such as Eldritch Blast, Gust of Wind, Levitate and Black Tentacles. Invoke has adapted these abilities for a single-player real-time action format. Fae Switch, for example, lets players swap places with an enemy, while Pact of the Blade Warlock summons physical weapons such as swords and hammers.

Invoke has also created original abilities. With Tasha’s Leash, Kaatri can conjure ethereal tentacles to pull objects or monsters and throw whatever they catch. Spells will have uses beyond combat: Black Tentacles can support a crate to aid movement or wrench an axe from an ogre’s hands.

Some abilities can be combined. Players can summon a conjuration table and create a storm, empowering chained Witch Bolts. Many spells can be found optionally throughout the world rather than being unlocked solely through an upgrade tree.

Invoke describes the map as dense, with nearby activities and points of interest designed to avoid long, aimless journeys. The team also aims to reduce reliance on navigation tools such as in-game maps, prioritizing exploration over prescribed story sequences.

The studio is also working to make Warlock accessible to players who have never played Dungeons & Dragons, without turning knowledge of the franchise into a barrier to entry.
