For decades, Sony has stood out for developing exclusive games for PlayStation. Resident Evil, God of War, and Crash Bandicoot are just a few examples of franchises that defined a generation and remained available only for this line of consoles for years.

In this article, we at UmGamer will highlight other important titles in the market that are not available for Xbox or Nintendo. We will cover everything from light-hearted adventures and puzzles to survival and horror to cater to all audiences.

Note: We are referring to exclusives in the context of consoles. Each year, Sony ports more of its games to PC, and that will not be considered here.

Until Dawn

Released in 2015, the horror game Until Dawn has been gaining more attention in recent years thanks to its PC release in 2024 and its movie adaptation, which is already confirmed to hit theaters this April.

The story follows a group of friends who lose two members during a trip to a mountain lodge. One year later, the same group returns to the location, hoping to put the tragedy behind them. However, after encountering macabre events, the trip turns into an endless nightmare.

A key feature to highlight is the “butterfly effect” present in the narrative: you make your own decisions, which directly impact the story. With multiple endings, your choices are crucial to the survival or death of the group.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank is a duo that has been on many adventures, and in 2021, they received their latest installment, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Although not as famous as some other titles on this list, it deserves your attention.

Unlike Until Dawn, this is a family-friendly title with no adult or violent themes. You’ll face a galaxy ruled by the robotic villain Nefarious and fight his henchmen as you progress through the story.

Exclusive to PlayStation 5 and PC, the game was one of the first to truly showcase the potential of the new generation, with phenomenal graphics and fast, fluid interdimensional combat gameplay.

Astro Bot

Keeping the light and family-friendly tone of Ratchet & Clank, we must also mention Astro Botlink outside website, an unmissable title as it was the most recent winner of the Game of the Year award at The Game Awardslink outside website.

It’s a 3D platformer where the goal is to progress through levels by defeating enemies and interacting with a wide variety of intuitive mechanics, keeping the gameplay engaging and fresh. Exploration is highly rewarded, with secret stages, treasure chests, and hundreds of collectible character models, many representing iconic Sony characters such as Kratos.

It’s another great way to have fun with family without encountering sensitive topics.

Bloodborne

Despite FromSoftware’s large PC player base, Bloodborne remains a PlayStation exclusive, sparking countless memes and debates online. The Soulslike from the creators of Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Sekiro holds a 92 score on Metacritic. Anyone with a PS4 or PS5 should take the time to experience it.

It’s not just another game in the genre. While it shares exploration and high difficulty, Bloodborne stands out with its darker, horror-inspired setting, drawing directly from H. P. Lovecraft instead of the medieval era. With faster, more aggressive combat than other titles, it offers a distinct experience while maintaining FromSoftware’s signature structure.

Days Gone

Days Gone arrived in 2019 for PS4 and is now also available on PC. A remastered PS5 version is up for pre-order, set to release on April 25.

Here, you’re introduced to a post-pandemic world where protagonist Deacon must survive against deadly creatures while uncovering various subplots. With only a few weapons, some gear, and a motorcycle, you’ll explore an open world, solve puzzles, and advance the campaign. An outstanding soundtrack and truly captivating environments make Days Gone worth your attention.

Structurally, it bears some resemblance to Watch Dogs, especially the first one. While their settings and themes differ greatly, both open-world games feature emotionally driven campaigns. Action-stealth gameplay is also a shared trait, where you can fight enemies head-on but often find stealthy approaches more effective.

The Last of Us

We’ve avoided mentioning the obvious exclusives, but The Last of Us is impossible to leave out, especially now with the TV show’s second season making waves.

The franchise has two main games, released in 2013 and 2020, both earning numerous award nominations. The sequel won 7 trophies at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year.

The premise puts you in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a parasitic fungal infection. The disease attacks victims’ brains, turning them into aggressive, irrational creatures that attack any living being.

In this setting, protagonist Joel is tasked with escorting Ellie to a group. Ellie is immune to the infection, and some believe she could be the key to a cure. Together, they journey across the United States, facing dangers from both infected creatures and hostile humans, while forming a deep emotional bond rooted in loss and trauma.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Shifting back to a lighter mood, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 3D platformer similar to Astro Bot and Super Mario 3D World. While not as well-known, it offers cooperative gameplay for up to 4 players; perfect for family fun!

Exclusive to PlayStation (4 and 5) and PC, it takes place in Sackboy’s colorful and joyful world, which is under threat from the villain Vex. Explore, solve puzzles, and defeat enemies to save the planet and its inhabitants.

The art direction here is fantastic, delivering beautiful visuals and an excellent soundtrack.

Gran Turismo 7

Available only on PS4 and PS5, Gran Turismo 7 stands as one of the franchise’s best entries. This stunning racing game excels in realism, with gorgeous tracks and thrilling races, especially at night.

With content gradually unlocked as you progress through its great campaign mode, it offers dozens of hours of entertainment. Plus, it supports PlayStation VR2 for an even greater sense of immersion.

Shadow of the Colossus

We felt it fair to include at least one classic alongside the newer releases, and Shadow of the Colossus is one of the best picks to honor the early 2000s era. Playable on PS2, PS3, and PS4, it received a remake for the last two generations in 2018.

It’s a linear story without multiple endings, but that doesn’t make it simple. The game offers references, interpretative mysteries, and hidden secrets for deeper story understanding.

You play as Wander, a young man seeking to resurrect a girl named Mono. To succeed, he must defeat 16 colossi.

The battles are unique and challenging, with each colossus having a hidden weak spot you must find. These massive foes require climbing to reach their vulnerabilities. Their designs and behaviors vary: some are agile, others hit harder, and one is even a sea serpent, leading to an underwater battle.

Helldivers 2

Finally, we wrap up with one of 2024’s most impactful releases: Helldivers 2! The game quickly won over thousands on PS5 and PC, filling servers within its first weeks. It’s a chaotic and fun co-op shooter for up to 4 players, without focusing heavily on tactical or theoretical play.

You and your friends must invade alien-controlled planets and wipe out the invaders to restore democracy. Expect plenty of explosions and tough battles, perfect for those looking for a casual, laugh-filled experience with friends.

Conclusion

Sony boasts a vast library of exclusives, from retro classics to modern hits, from family-friendly games to horror and apocalyptic stories. This is undoubtedly one of the company’s greatest strengths.
