Ocarina of Time is a good starting point for Zelda, especially for players who enjoy an adventure with clearly defined progression and dungeons that demand their attention. The original introduces its world without requiring any knowledge of previous games and gradually teaches players how to explore Hyrule. That foundation makes the Nintendo Switch 2 remake, scheduled for November 5, 2026, a promising choice for newcomers to the franchise.

The recommendation is tied to the kind of experience it offers. Players who became curious about Zelda after seeing the freedom of Breath of the Wild may prefer to start with that game. Those more interested in following a guided journey, discovering equipment and figuring out the routes through each temple have good reason to choose Ocarina. The November release could make that approach more accessible to people who never played the Nintendo 64 version.

How the original introduced Hyrule to players

Released in 1998, Ocarina of Time brought the series into three dimensions. The adventure began in Kokiri Forest, where Link lived before answering the call of the Great Deku Tree. This opening area allowed players to learn the controls and talk to the locals before tackling a dungeon and discovering that an entire kingdom lay beyond the forest.

Leaving for Hyrule Field expanded the scale of the journey. Link began encountering places and people who helped provide context for Ganondorf's threat. Meeting Princess Zelda established the next objectives, while the story explained the importance of the Triforce and the interests at stake in the struggle to control it.

This opening works well as a first introduction because it follows a protagonist who is discovering that world at the same time as the player. Players understand the characters' motivations within the campaign itself. There's no need to study the franchise's timeline or finish the previous Zelda games to follow the conflict.

The transition from Link's childhood to adulthood deepened that connection with Hyrule. Returning to familiar places revealed what had changed and made the consequences of earlier events clear. For newcomers to the series, this structure offers a story compelling enough to sustain the desire to keep moving forward.

Ocarina taught its logic as the adventure progressed

The strongest argument for starting with Ocarina lies in how it introduced its challenges. Inside the Great Deku Tree, the slingshot allowed players to hit distant targets, while the platforms encouraged them to observe the dungeon from different heights. Discovering a tool came with situations that taught players how to use it.

That logic continued throughout the campaign. Acquiring a piece of equipment expanded Link's options and could open up a passage seen hours earlier. Players learned to recognize obstacles and connect them to what they were carrying in their inventory. Finding an important chest created anticipation about where that item would prove useful.

The dungeons developed this understanding through increasingly elaborate spaces. Players had to grasp how the rooms connected and observe how one action could change the route forward. Combat also rewarded attentiveness: lock-on targeting helped players keep track of enemies, while their movements indicated when to defend or attack.

For beginners, this progression provides direction. There's room to explore and discover optional activities, but the campaign's objectives help organize the journey. Players who struggle with a huge map full of possibilities from the outset may adapt more easily to this pace.

Ocarina also helps players understand the structure that other 3D Zelda games later developed, such as The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Investigating environments and experimenting with equipment becomes familiar. That gives the game value as a first introduction for anyone planning to explore other chapters in the franchise.

What made starting with the Nintendo 64 version difficult

The original's age was most apparent in its controls. The camera frequently had to be repositioned behind Link, and the Nintendo 64 controller used a layout unlike those found on modern consoles. For anyone accustomed to freely moving the camera with a second analog stick, the first few hours could require patience.

Some interface choices also interrupted exploration. In the Water Temple, for example, switching boots through the menu made an already demanding dungeon even more tiresome, especially when players were trying to understand its different floors and changes in the water level. At other times, unclear clues could leave players unsure where to go next.

These difficulties are worth considering when recommending the classic. Someone may love the idea of figuring out a temple and still become frustrated by the effort required to control the camera. The remake matters precisely because it could make this adventure easier to access.

How the Switch 2 remake aims to welcome new players

Nintendo has announced improved controls and a modernized cameralink outside website, along with jumping and dashing actions. The aim is to make movement feel more familiar to players coming to Ocarina after playing more recent adventures. That could help beginners focus more on the environments and challenges.

The presentation will also be changing. According to the company, the remake will feature voiced scenes, expanded dialogue and orchestral musiclink outside website. These additions could give the characters more room and strengthen the atmosphere of each story moment.

The remade visuals have already sparked debate over Link's new appearancelink outside website. Newcomers to the series will be able to experience this interpretation without constantly comparing it with the old models. For this audience, the forest and castle will become their first memories of the adventure.

The Brazilian Portuguese supportlink outside website is another point in favor of starting here. Understanding conversations and instructions helps in a game that uses dialogue to point players toward objectives and provide context for discoveries. The language listing, however, doesn't confirm Portuguese voice acting.

These additions make the remake especially appealing as a first Zelda game. The caveat concerns the execution: the release will show how the new controls perform and which of the original's difficulties remain. The announced features make it possible to discuss the remake's potential, while a definitive assessment of the adaptation will have to wait for the full game.

Should you start with Ocarina or choose another Zelda?

Ocarina of Time is our recommendation for anyone who wants to experience the series' classic structure in a 3D adventure. The story presents its world clearly, and progression through new equipment helps players learn how to explore its dungeons. For anyone with a Switch 2 who connects with that approach, following the November remake as a candidate for their first Zelda makes sense. Playing the 1998 edition first is optional.

Breath of the Wild is the better choice if your curiosity began with the freedom to climb mountains, choose destinations and improvise solutions. In that case, starting with it brings players directly into the experience that sparked their interest. Knowing Ocarina beforehand may add context, but it isn't required.

The decision can begin with a simple question: would you rather figure out how to progress through a huge dungeon, or choose a distant point on the map and find your own way there? Ocarina puts more emphasis on the first experience; Breath of the Wild expands the possibilities of the second.

For those who choose Ocarina, the remake offers the chance to experience a landmark adventure with controls closer to those of recent games. Its value as an entry point lies in that combination: a journey that teaches players how to explore Hyrule, along with changes that could make the first steps easier. So, what do you think? Will you set out on this adventure in September, or start with Breath of the Wild?
