Mouthwashing is getting a film adaptation. Sony has acquired the rights to the game for a feature film produced by Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems and directed by Karyn Kusama. No release date has been announced.

Kusama directed Jennifer’s Body and previously worked with Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, the writers attached to the project, on The Invitation and Destroyer. The pair also wrote Clash of the Titans, The Tuxedo and R.I.P.D.. Scott Derrickson, director of Sinister and Doctor Strange, is also involved in producing the film.

The creative team faces a central challenge: how to bring a story to the screen when it controls what players know through its characters’ perspectives. In Mouthwashing, the first-person viewpoint reveals some parts of the story while keeping others hidden. Despite the limited interactivity, the way players experience events is integral to the game.

The game also deals with the exploitation of workers by companies and sexual violence. Both subjects will require care in the adaptation, particularly because film cannot give audiences the same relationship to the game’s first-person perspective.

For now, the director, writers and producer are the only details announced about the film. No cast or release date has been announced.

Based on reporting by Rock Paper Shotgun.
