Path of Exile 2 will receive its first event league, Forbidden Rites, on September 4. The new content will serve as a smaller-scale experience ahead of the game’s launch, adding a change to the campaign and a significant overhaul of one of the endgame’s most controversial activities.

Grinding Gear Games has kept the concept simpler than those of its major updates. During the campaign, Ritual altars will appear at different points, spawning waves of monsters and offering rewards to players. Some will be able to summon multiple bosses at once, creating more dangerous encounters in exchange for a chance to obtain a powerful unique item.

The ability to combine bosses already existed in Ritual’s endgame version. The league, however, will bring the idea to the campaign, including encounters that can pit players against creatures such as the stone-pillar-wielding gorilla.

Forbidden Rites will also overhaul the Trial of Chaos, an activity that involves fighting monsters across multiple stages and choosing modifiers that make survival even more difficult. The effects mentioned include a 40% reduction to defenses and bloodied tentacles that hold the character in place as enemies advance.

In the new version, the modifiers will not start with effects as severe as those in the current version. They will also offer something in return for the added difficulty, with a small improvement tied to the quality of the rewards. The change is intended to make the mode more appealing to players who have avoided its challenges.

The announcement presents the league as a way to keep Path of Exile 2 active ahead of its expected arrival this year. The Return of the Ancients update had expanded the action RPG’s content, while Forbidden Rites will take a more streamlined approach focused on Ritual and Trial of Chaos.

Forbidden Rites begins on September 4, but Grinding Gear Games did not announce a specific date for the full release of Path of Exile 2 in the text.
