The Xbox Project Helix may face an additional obstacle before it even reaches the market. Micron, one of the three largest DRAM suppliers, expects demand for memory to remain above supply in 2027 and 2028, a situation likely to drive up console production costs.During the company’s fiscal 2026 earnings call, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the industry could face an even more severe shortage over the next two years. “In 2027 and also in 2028, we see demand exceeding supply,” he said. According to the executive, the market will be tighter in both years than it was in 2026, with no clear forecast for supply and demand to return to balance. The situation is linked to the so-called “component crisis” mentioned by Xbox executives throughout 2026. In June, Microsoft said that storage and memory prices for consoles had risen by more than 2.5 times and projected another doubling by the fall of 2027. The company also said the crisis was having a particularly strong impact on consoles.Asha Sharma, head of Xbox, had already said that the industry needed to pursue innovation in accessibility and efficiency. Rising costs, however, make it more difficult to design a next-generation console at a price considered affordable. It is still unclear which storage and memory suppliers Microsoft will use for Project Helix, or what measures it may take to mitigate the impact of rising prices. There is also no confirmation of the device’s release date. The possibility of news on November 15, during the Xbox’s 25th anniversary, remains purely speculative. The same problem could affect the PlayStation 6, while the Nintendo Switch 2 could also face further price increases in the coming years.
