Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve had the biggest launch in the series’ history on Steam. The game officially launched on the platform on October 2, following three days of early access, and reached 52,694 concurrent players on Saturday, one day after its official release.

The peak was recorded by SteamDB. There are no figures available for Ace Combat 8’s performance on PlayStation or Xbox, but the PC version has already comfortably surpassed the franchise’s previous records.

The Ace Combat series has historically been tied to consoles, with several games never receiving PC versions. That began to change with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which launched on PC just days after its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases. The game reached 13,758 concurrent players on Steam, setting a record for the franchise’s biggest PC launch at the time.

Player reception has also been positive on the platform. Ace Combat 8 has a “Very Positive” rating based on more than 5,755 reviews on Steam.

The launch was not without controversy, however. Players raised concerns about the Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War pre-order bonus after discovering that it does not work as a standalone application, as the store description suggested. To access it, players must launch the content through Ace Combat 8, creating what they considered unnecessary difficulties.

Bandai Namco apologized for the store description, which it acknowledged was misleading, and said it would look into possible solutions. Despite the backlash, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve reached 52,694 concurrent players on Steam.
