The remake of the first The Witcher has been put on hold as Fool’s Theory focuses its efforts on other CD Projekt Red projects. The studio is working on the Songs of the Past expansion, additional content for The Witcher 3 scheduled for next year, while also assisting with the development of The Witcher 4.

The change in direction was confirmed in a statement from CD Projekt Red. According to the company, The Witcher Remake will be built on the technology developed for the series’ fourth game. As a result, the team needs access to the assets, tools and production pipelines required to develop the project efficiently.

In practice, the remake will remain on hold until work on the current projects progresses. The Witcher 4 is planned for release in 2028, which puts the remake’s potential release window no earlier than 2029. That estimate does not represent an official release date announced by CD Projekt Red.

The decision also reflects a significant technical shift for the franchise. The Witcher 4 will be the Polish company’s first game developed outside REDengine, its proprietary technology used in previous projects. Development is taking place in Unreal Engine 5, which is also expected to serve as the foundation for the remake of the original game.

Fool’s Theory was initially hired to remake the first The Witcher, but later began splitting its work between Songs of the Past and the series’ next mainline chapter. Through this approach, CD Projekt Red intends to make use of the technology developed for The Witcher 4 when rebuilding the title originally released in 2007. So far, the company has not announced a release date for The Witcher Remake.
