CD Projekt Red cannot guarantee a disc-based edition of The Witcher 4 for PlayStation 5 when the game launches in 2028. The reason lies in Sony’s manufacturing policies, as the company handles production of first-party discs at its own factories.

Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, said the studio has no influence over the decision. Sony announced plans to stop manufacturing discs starting in January 2028, but it is still unclear whether the change will be permanent or introduced gradually.

There is also no exact release date for The Witcher 4. The game could launch at any point in 2028, putting its release window close to the possible end of PS5 disc production. The Witcher 3 was released in May 2015, while Cyberpunk 2077 arrived in December 2020 after delays to its initially scheduled release dates.

Although it does not control manufacturing, CD Projekt Red says it intends to release a physical edition of The Witcher 4 in some form. The studio wants to include a box containing “feelies,” a term for physical and collectible items designed to be opened and enjoyed by fans.

The statement confirms that the company still does not know what the final format of the PlayStation 5 edition will be. The presence of a physical box is guaranteed by the studio’s promise, but whether it will include a disc depends on Sony.

Nowakowski was the one who recently limited The Witcher 4’s release window to 2028. Before that, the project had only been confirmed not to arrive before 2027. So far, CD Projekt Red has not confirmed a specific date or explained how a potential disc-free physical edition would work.
