Terranigma, the classic action RPG originally released for the Super Nintendo in 1995, has been announced for Nintendo Switch, with a release planned for 2027. The adaptation will mark the game's return to modern consoles and its first re-release since its debut.

The adventure follows Ark, a mischievous young man who lives in the village of Crysta, located on the Dark Side of a world formed by a hollow Earth. The planet has two sides: the Light Side on the outside and the Dark Side on the inside. When Ark opens a forbidden door, he sets off a series of events capable of transforming the world around him.

Terranigma was released during an era remembered as the golden age of 2D Japanese RPGs, but it forged its own identity with a complex world, real-time combat and a memorable soundtrack. The game was developed by Quintet, a studio known for exploring themes of creation and destruction in its 1990s titles.

The battle system combines traditional RPG elements with direct action. Under the player's control, Ark uses his spear to perform thrusts, aerial attacks, charges and other moves. Enemies also move in real time, demanding the player's attention during battles.

The characters were designed by manga artist Kamui Fujiwara and later hand-pixelated. The soundtrack alternates between melancholy and upbeat tracks, following the journey's themes and events.
