Rockstar Games will face an employment tribunal hearing beginning September 10, as it prepares for the release of GTA 6. The case concerns the dismissal of 34 employees in October last year, 31 of whom were connected to Rockstar North.

The company classified the dismissals as cases of “gross misconduct.” According to Rockstar, the employees breached confidentiality agreements by discussing internal matters in a private Discord channel operated by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, the IWGB.

The former employees dispute that account. They say the conversations concerned pay and working conditions, issues normally discussed in union spaces. The IWGB maintains that the dismissals were unfair and accuses Rockstar of attempting to blacklist the workers because of their union activity.

Rockstar tried to have the claims dismissed, but the tribunal rejected the request. The full hearing is scheduled to run until October 16. The union is seeking the employees’ reinstatement or compensation, as well as recognition that the dismissals were unfair.

The impacts reported by the workers include the loss of their jobs, income and the opportunity to complete a project developed over several years. One case cited by the IWGB involves an Australian employee whose work visa was allegedly revoked by Rockstar, forcing him to return to Australia.

The dispute sparked protests outside Rockstar North’s offices and reached the British Parliament. Meanwhile, the Rockstar Game Workers Union was formed and also raised concerns about the use of bonuses as leverage and the gender pay gap within the company.
