No Man's Sky is coming to iPhone and iPad on October 28, with all updates included. Hello Games says the game will run on iPhone 11 and newer models. Some of the work that made the port possible came from another project at the studio: Light No Fire.

In a presentation video, Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray said the team has been working on this version for almost three years. The aim is to deliver console-quality visuals and gameplay on mobile devices, with support for touch controls, controllers and even a mouse and keyboard.

At one point, the team believed a mobile version would never be possible.

Advances in iPhone hardware helped change that outlook, but they were only part of the story. According to Murray, the studio had to rethink how to improve performance and make better use of limited memory. Some solutions emerged during development of Light No Fire and could be carried over to No Man's Sky because the two games share the same engine.

That work should also benefit players on platforms beyond Apple's devices. Murray said Hello Games has made a range of tweaks and improvements expected to benefit all platforms, including PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox.

Announced in 2023, Light No Fire is a co-op adventure set on a procedurally generated fantasy planet. Rather than the millions of planets in No Man's Sky, the project focuses exploration on a single open world, which the studio describes as a planet without borders.

Murray recently indicated that development of Light No Fire was well advanced, but did not announce a release date.
