The League of Legends MMO remains in development at Riot Games. Speaking with Greg Miller during PAX, co-founder Mark Merrill described the project as the studio’s “holy grail,” five years after it was announced in August 2021.

Merrill acknowledged the immense expectations surrounding the game and said the challenge lies in execution.

“We know what players’ hopes and dreams are. It’s up to us as a team to determine whether we can execute successfully.”

According to the executive, Riot uses the term “grail” internally in a lighthearted way. He compared development to a journey in which many knights may fall, but argued that the team must remain willing to pursue such an ambitious goal.

“That’s the mindset we’re really trying to cultivate. And it’s hard to do that at scale. But I think we’re doing a reasonably good job. And I think the future is incredibly bright.”

The project has undergone major changes since its announcement. In 2024, Riot restarted development on the MMO; at the time, Merrill explained that the studio had gone back to the drawing board some time earlier. The game has also lost several key developers along the way.

Fans’ concerns had grown in 2022, when Greg Street, then executive producer, warned that there was no guarantee the MMO would be released. Street left Riot in early 2023.

In January, former World of Warcraft producer Raymond Bartos joined Riot Games, renewing the community’s hopes for the project. The company has yet to announce a release window, platforms, or concrete details about what the League of Legends MMO will be like.
