The Borderlands franchise has sold more than 100 million copies across all its games, Gearbox Software announced. The studio marked the milestone by discussing the series’ future, though it has yet to reveal its next major move.

In a post, Gearbox looked back on the series’ beginnings with the first Borderlands, released in 2009, and credited the community for helping it endure. The studio said player feedback continues to shape development.

The immediate focus is Borderlands 4. After completing its first-year content roadmap, which included two playable characters and two story packs, Gearbox said it is working on more content for the game next year. It has not shared any concrete details about that content. In the meantime, weekly activities and community challenges will continue to receive updates.

Gearbox also said it is looking at the franchise as a whole. The studio wants to hear which characters players would like to see more of and which stories still need a conclusion. It has not announced any specific projects along those lines and said its bigger plans will take time.

Borderlands 4’s launch fell short of expectations, partly because of performance issues on PC. The promised Nintendo Switch 2 version has also been delayed indefinitely. According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the team is focused on improving the game on existing platforms before bringing it to another one. Gearbox has not announced a new release date for the Switch 2 version.
