Activision has confirmed that one of its studios is working on a new Call of Duty subseries. The company's marketing director, Tyler Bahl, did not say which team is developing it or give a release window. There are also no official details yet about its setting or gameplay.

The news suggests Activision is looking to make room for stories beyond Black Ops and Modern Warfare. Bahl said Modern Warfare 4 will bring the story Infinity Ward has been telling since 2019 to a close, though he left open the possibility of returning to that universe and some of its characters.

For future games, the stated aim is to experiment. According to Bahl, players want something new, better or different, while their tastes and the ways they play continue to change. That still offers no clear indication of where the new subseries will go.

There is speculation that Sledgehammer Games is handling the project, but Activision has not confirmed the connection. A rumor reported in 2025 suggested that an upcoming game from the studio could feature martial arts, with karate-inspired kicks and strikes. That claim remains unconfirmed and should not be taken as a description of the game Bahl announced.

Sledgehammer has explored different approaches to the series before. Before working on the original Modern Warfare 3, the studio developed a third-person Call of Duty set during the Vietnam War, but the project was canceled. Later, Advanced Warfare introduced exoskeletons and new movement options, including jumps and quick dashes.

For now, the confirmed details are limited: a new subseries is in development. Activision has yet to announce its name, the studio behind it or a release date.
