An internal trailer for Mass Effect Universe, a canceled game that had been in development at BioWare, has surfaced online following the studio’s closure. The video offers a first look at the project, which would have featured a new protagonist, their own ship and a crew drawn from species familiar to fans of the series.

The footage was made for EA executives, not for public release. An opening message says the scenes were captured in-engine by a small team, using assets still in pre-production. The trailer’s authenticity was confirmed through reporting and corroborated by journalist Jason Schreier on his personal Bluesky account.

In the footage, the protagonist travels across the galaxy, fights with weapons and biotic powers, and shares a ship with a crew that includes a krogan. Quick cuts show a romantic scene, an armed standoff and a mysterious creature being studied inside a large tube. Near the end, Liara, from the original trilogy, appears before a bar fight.

The trailer leaves many questions about how Mass Effect Universe would have played. According to a former BioWare employee, the team wanted to learn from Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Witcher to give players more freedom and choice without straying from the original trilogy. The video, however, shows only a portion of a project that was still in development.

About 50 people working on the game lost their jobs in EA’s recent cuts, which affected 400 employees across the company. The layoffs also hit teams at other studios, including Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle and EA Motive.
