itch.io plans to add a search filter that excludes games whose creators disclose the use of generative AI. The platform will also extend its disclosure requirement to tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks. It has not announced when the filter will be available.

The site has required disclosures for game assets uploaded to it for two years. Under the change, people searching for games will be able to exclude those whose pages disclose the use of generative AI. The filter therefore relies on information provided by the people behind each project; the announcement is not a ban on such content.

itch.io acknowledged that its previous moderation of generative AI use in projects was “critically insufficient”. The platform also said the number of game pages created each day has doubled over the past two months. In a separate post, it said it had deleted several terabytes of AI-generated content.

The move gives users a way to tailor their searches without preventing projects that use the technology from being published. But creator disclosures remain essential to the filter: a game without the correct disclosure could still appear in a user’s results.

For creators of tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks, the change is the extension of a disclosure requirement previously applied to game assets. For people browsing the catalog, the most visible change will be the option to exclude games identified as using generative AI. itch.io has yet to say when the new filter will be available.
