Gears of War: E-Day has found a way around the Xbox Series S's memory limitations. The Coalition is using the console's NVMe SSD as a second memory layer, allowing the game to handle dense, highly detailed environments more effectively.

The Xbox Series S has 10 GB of GDDR6 memory, less than the amount available on the Series X. To ease that constraint, some of E-Day's data is transferred to the console's ultra-fast storage. The game engine moves whatever needs to be accessed immediately into main memory and sends inactive data back to the SSD.

The technique does not make the SSD as fast as conventional RAM, but it allows the flow of information to be managed more efficiently. The system analyzes access patterns and determines which data can be moved without significantly affecting performance. Frequently used data remains in RAM, while idle information can be sent to the SSD.

The technology was developed by The Coalition in partnership with Xbox's Advanced Technology Group. The approach could prove useful for other games on the console, particularly as productions such as GTA 6 and Fable become increasingly complex. Its specific implementation in E-Day, however, may be exclusive to the game.

The strategy also comes at a time when the current console generation is facing greater technical demands and could last longer than initially expected, partly because of the ongoing memory shortage. Mac devices already use similar techniques to move data between faster and slower types of memory.

During development, The Coalition also updated other elements of E-Day's engine. These include the blood and dismemberment technology, after the studio concluded that some fans had grown accustomed to the series' violence.
