Funcom has announced a restructuring that will lead to more layoffs. The studio behind Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles will focus on supporting its existing games. CEO Rui Casais will also leave the company once the reorganization is complete, with his departure expected by the end of the year.

The shift comes as Dune: Awakening moves out of its main production phase and into long-term development and operation. In a statement, Casais said it was Funcom’s biggest project to date and required years of significant development investment across the company’s studios. The new phase, he said, calls for a different structure from the one needed at the height of production.

Casais said he would like to retain everyone who helped create Dune: Awakening, but Funcom cannot sustain the size and structure of the team assembled for its most intensive development period. He said his priority now is to handle the process with support, respect and transparency for affected employees. The company did not say how many people will be laid off.

Dune: Awakening sold one million copies in the two weeks after its launch in June last year, becoming the fastest-selling game in the Norwegian developer’s history. Player numbers fell sharply after that initial surge. Its PvP features and faction-based endgame content also drew a mixed response from the community.

This is not the first round of cuts tied to that period: Funcom previously laid off staff in October last year. More recently, the studio has reworked Dune: Awakening to move away from some of its MMO elements, including by adding a solo play option.
