Embark Studios acknowledged that some of the criticism surrounding its use of artificial intelligence in Arc Raiders was justified. The technology was used to imitate actors’ voices and supplement the game’s dialogue, a decision that triggered a strong backlash among players.

The controversy accompanied Arc Raiders’ launch, which attracted many players with its more accessible take on the extraction genre. That enthusiasm, however, was divided by the AI-assisted voice lines. Some players said that certain voices sounded lifeless, poorly polished and strange.

The actors involved had signed contracts allowing Embark to use the technology. Even so, the negative reception prompted the studio to re-record lines and bring more human voices into the game.

“Whenever you test a new technology, you never really know how people will react,” Embark’s team said. The studio had already expected a sensitive reaction because it had used similar technology in The Finals. The company also acknowledged that taking a defensive stance in response to the criticism would make little sense, making what was best for the game its priority.

According to Embark audio director Bence Pajor, the actors had always been involved in the project. The issue was that many lines were only finalized shortly before implementation. As a result, the team created training data from the performers’ own voices to produce prototypes during development.

The use of AI was also presented as a matter of efficiency, rather than a preference for the technology. Embark explained that Arc Raiders requires a large number of lines for every new item and feature added, while the content can still change shortly before it is finalized. For the studio, that process made it impractical to record every line in advance with human actors.
