Edit Article

The Sims 3 is over a decade old, but it's still a favorite among the Sims community. Even today, the game is sold on both Origin and Steam (and occasionally goes on sale), and it still has a very active fanbase and, even better, a base of extremely skilled modders!

Like other games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Sims 4, this game still receives a flood of mods that modify everything from its interface and gameplay to offering new and fun features for the Sims.

And if you took advantage of a sale and got this game and want to know which are the coolest mods to install and play with, then we'll give you some suggestions for modifications and explain how you can install them. If you have any questions, just leave a comment.

How do I install mods in The Sims 3?

Before installing any mods, some preparation is necessary. First, you’ll need the FrameworkSetup.zip file. Download this file and extract it to the Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 folder on your PC (this path should be the same for both Origin and Steam downloads). In the The Sims 3 folder, there will now be a new folder called Mods, containing the Overrides and Packages folders. Your mods will be installed in these folders. See the image:

Now you're ready to download mods — just make sure you read the descriptions of the mods you download to place them in the right place. Now, check out some of the most interesting mods you can download for your The Sims 3 and get ready to experience a whole new level of gameplay!

Active Careers

The Ultimate Careers mod makes careers in The Sims 3 more similar to the active careers in The Sims 4: Get to Work or The Sims 3: Ambitions.

When you assign a career or school to an applicable community lot, your Sims will now interact with objects on that lot while you control them. Certain objects will increase or decrease their job performance depending on the requirements of their role, but other measures – such as mood and relationships – still apply.

All Hidden Objects Visible

The Sims 3 has many objects, and while there are several ways to search for items, it's inevitable that something will get lost in the clutter. The Like For Build and Buy Mode mod unlocks almost all of the game's debugging items, all properly categorized and organized. It replaces the "sort by function" filter of Build and Buy Mode, grouping similar items together; all other categorization systems remain intact.

The mod doesn't take price into account when grouping objects; instead, it groups items of similar types (beds, for example — Single Beds > Bunk Beds > Double Beds > Double Beds with Ceiling > Special Beds — to demonstrate the categorization). There's also a historical version, which ignores electrical objects, making it perfect for medieval worlds.

A lovely mod

This mod reworks The Sims 3's attraction system to make it more detailed and comprehensive. Essentially, the system is now more selective, and you can tailor the factors you want to contribute to a Sim feeling attracted to another. There are options covering zodiac signs, rewards, traits, and mood attraction, as well as "variety" and "purity" options.

Variety combines all the aforementioned factors when considering attraction, and purity encourages Sims to be faithful to their partners, even if your active Sim doesn't know about them. Purity and Variety also come with easy variants, which makes the attraction thresholds a bit lower.

Zoom Camera on CaS

With sliders for individual body parts and the Create a Style color wheel, The Sims 3 offers incredible customization options. However, unfortunately, it's almost impossible to zoom in close enough on your Sim's face to take advantage of them.

The Zoom in CaS mod does exactly what the name suggests: it allows you to zoom in much closer on your Sim's face to really visualize the changes you're making. This mod is also great for closely observing accessories like belts or jewelry. Furthermore, it makes it much easier to drag patterns or colors from one piece of clothing to another, since you can now zoom in appropriately.

Management

Any mod from creator NRaas is undoubtedly indispensable for The Sims 3 players, but the manager called Overwatch is a great starting point. This mod allows you to change a multitude of in-game settings, but its best feature is the daily cleanup. These cleanups help reduce lag and crashes, as well as fix broken elements in the game that could otherwise lead to save corruption over time.

There are many customizable settings, but some notable additions include: preventing the autonomous adoption of pets, automatically enabling testingcheats, turning off radios and TVs, and disabling full moon lighting effects—although this doesn't disable zombies; for that, you'll need the Retuner mod (more below).

If you've played for a long time on a single save, you can also perform a full reset of your town. This works similarly to resetting a Sim. If the game freezes for a second, don't worry—it's just the mod working! It will take a minute or two to update everything, but after that, your save will be clean and working better.

Story Progression

The Story Progression mod replaces the game's standard Story Progression system and adds a variety of new settings. It takes into account the Sims' traits to determine what they’d theoretically do or not do. More importantly, it organizes Story Progression into categories, providing much more control over how it works, unlike the standard system where progression can only be fully enabled or disabled.

This mod includes settings at the Lot, Family, Sims, and even Caste levels (castes are groups of Sims that players can create and define, allowing them to assign specific settings to these groups). You can also enable or disable story progression for specific Sims, Families, or Lots. The mod also comes with several optional modules, making it fully customizable.

Not All Memories Are Important

Memories in The Sims 3 are a very cool addition that came with the Generations DLC, and their presence in a memory album is an interesting detail. However, most players agree that going to the park isn't exactly something that deserves to be recorded alongside wedding photos.

The No (Or Fewer) Automatic Memories mod allows your Sims to have no automatic memories or only memories focused on truly significant life events. Furthermore, there's a custom tool available for download that lets you control exactly which memories your Sims will automatically gain. Since you can only have one version of this mod installed in the game at a time, it's easy to swap files whenever you want a change.

Revitalized CaS

The Sims 3 is "cursed" with shiny clothing textures across the board (even the jeans look like they've been coated in plastic). But this mod saves Create a Sim, making standard replacements for every piece of clothing in the game – yes, every pack – plus a bunch of clothing sets from The Sims 3 Store.

The content of each DLC is packaged individually; therefore, it's easy to add and remove only the clothing items you already own. If you're unsure about The Sims 3's graphics, this is one of the best ways to make the game look better while keeping things in the Maxis style.

Many more interactions

This mod adds new interactions to The Sims 3 and fixes some existing ones to make them more detailed or complex. Most of these new interactions are social, but community lots also have additional functionality. Sims can now try to buy ingredients from restaurants, attend shows and games in groups, and work overtime or individual part-time shifts on any lot that offers jobs.

Many of these actions are autonomous, which is great for the game – but be careful when uninstalling this mod. The creator notes that you should make sure that no Sim was performing these interactions when you saved the game.

Who needs a day off?

Time off from work in the real world can be a blessing. While time off in The Sims 3 can be nice, it can also prevent you from achieving some of your goals and earning Simoleons. This simple mod will solve all your problems! Now, you can easily cancel time off directly from your phone. Furthermore, you can adjust how many days you want to cancel.

This will be useful if you have a Sim who recently gave birth. While quality time with a baby can be great, it can start to drag on, especially if your Sim is already nearing aging again.

Sit down for a minute

Sims never seem to stay in one place for very long. Meals can be eaten standing up, and conversations can happen next to a table. With this mod, your Sims will now sit for up to two hours without randomly deciding to get up.

With the power to make Sims sit comes great responsibility. If you order a Sim to sit on a couch and then leave them alone, they will stay there regardless of how they’re feeling. Be sure to monitor your seated Sims. You don't want them to starve to death on the couch.

Cleaner Interface

The Sims 3 interface is charming, but it may not suit all styles. With the Clean UI mod, you can play with a minimalist interface. This mod doesn't change the game, but it can make its appearance a little more pleasing to the eye.

This is a great mod to download if you prefer a cleaner look, instead of having a blue interface that stands out too much. Now it can better match your dream home.

Define the lot sizes

Generally speaking, The Sims 3 is quite generous with lot sizes, especially when compared to The Sims 4, where lots are predefined and cannot be resized. While this lot customization is great, some buildings require specific sizes that you might not find in The Sims 3's lot tab.

EA adds new community and/or residential lots in each expansion. Unfortunately, the sizes of these lots can be completely random. Or, even if they aren't, they might have dimensions like 40x30, which aren't available in the World Editor.

With this mod, you can customize the size of any lot. This allows you to create specific spaces for your world. Now you can build a unique city, full of buildings with different shapes!

Correcting Minor Errors

As much as we love The Sims series, it's known for being quite buggy. Some of these bugs can crash your game or corrupt your save file. That's where ErrorTrap comes in. The mod captures and corrects these errors when they occur, allowing you to play as long as you want.

Even if you don't plan on using other mods in your game, ErrorTrap is indispensable for keeping your saves functional. Like Overwatch, the ErrorTrap mod doesn't make visible changes to your game. Instead, it focuses on small background fixes that you might not have even thought of making with mods.

Much More Control

The Retuner mod is definitely geared towards more advanced users. Most interactions in The Sims 3 have a series of settings defined in the game's code. It's possible to "tweak" these settings to modify the game, altering its parameters.

Perhaps you want a specific bed to recover more energy or an interaction to take longer. Creating these mods is usually a laborious process, but with Retuner, you can easily change these settings without having to close the game.

While there are numerous tuning mods available for things like needs decay or pregnancy duration, keeping track of them all can be exhausting. This mod is ideal for those willing to invest a little effort. After mastering the basics of tuning in The Sims 3, you can customize virtually every function of the game to your liking.

Absolute Control

The MasterController is a powerful mod that allows you to do virtually anything with any Sim. It can be used for cheating, but it's especially useful for managing Sims that aren't in your active unit. Editing the appearance of NPCs (townies) is one of the most popular functions, but you can also delete corrupted Sims or drastically alter NPC relationships.

While MasterController works perfectly in the base game, it integrates very well with other mods in the NRaas suite. There's an optional module that offers greater control over certain aspects of the Story Progression mod. There are also other modules that allow you to do everything from breaking the game to altering the tattoo system in CAS.

Random Names

In several situations in The Sims 3, you’re prompted to choose a name for a Sim. This occurs in CaS, during adoptions, births, or even when naming a stuffed animal. Unlike The Sims 4, there’s no option to randomize names if you're not feeling inspired. This can be tricky for certain playstyles, such as the 100 Babies Challenge.

The Name Randomizer mod, by Eca, solves this. It adds a small dice icon to the name interface, similar to that in The Sims 4. You can also separately randomize first and last names, giving you complete control over the amount of effort you want to put into naming your Sims.

Move objects freely

The MoveObjects and Constrain Floor Elevation (CFE) cheats are indispensable for builder Simmers. MoveObjects allows you to arrange objects outside the limits normally imposed by the game, while CFE allows for greater creativity with wall, floor, and platform heights. This mod, created by Eca, allows you to switch between these cheats with the press of a key.

Now you no longer need to type the complete code in the console by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C. With this mod, MoveObjects is activated by the 'o' key in Build/Buy mode, while CFE is activated by the 'f' key.

About The Sims 3

The Sims 3 is a life simulation game where players create and control "Sims". You can customize your Sims and their homes, and live their lives in an open world without loading screen limitations between locations. The great innovation of The Sims 3 was the addition of a seamless world where your Sims can interact with their neighbors and participate in various activities, such as going to work, making friends, dating, getting married, and having children.

The game offers a series of expansions that add new places, professions, skills, and even new generations of Sims. The game's dynamics involve making decisions to create and shape the lives of your Sims according to your own desires and goals, in an experience where family ties, friendships, and careers are fundamental to the characters' progress.
