Grasshopper Manufacture has announced the end of its partnership with NetEase and confirmed that it will once again operate as an independent studio. The Chinese company acquired the developer in 2021.The decision was made after discussions between the two companies which, according to a statement signed by Goichi Suda, also known as Suda51, resulted in the end of NetEase’s involvement. The executive added that the companies remain on good terms and could work together again if an opportunity arises.Known for games such as No More Heroes III, Killer7 and Shadows of the Damned, Grasshopper Manufacture said it wants to produce titles across an even wider range of genres. The studio also said it has expanded its knowledge of self-publishing, giving it more options for deciding how its upcoming projects will reach the public.Suda51’s message mentions the release of Romeo Is a Dead Man, Grasshopper Manufacture’s latest project. The game was released in February and received positive reviews, according to the studio. In March, the company also celebrated its 28th anniversary.The developer said it would remain committed to experiences defined by its “NO GAME NO LIFE” identity and distinctive style. The statement describes independence as the company’s next step on the road to its 30th anniversary and beyond.Romeo Is a Dead Man could still receive a Switch 2 version, although the current status of that release is unknown. The title was self-published by Grasshopper Manufacture. The company also has another game planned for 2026, but no details about the project have been announced.
