RuneScape is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by Andrew and Paul Gower and published by Jagex. It began as the browser game RuneScape, released in January 2001, after the Gower brothers’ earlier DeviousMUD project. Its world, Gielinor, uses a click-based interface in which players travel, fight, trade, gather resources, train skills, and undertake quests. Rather than assigning fixed character classes, RuneScape lets one account develop many disciplines, from Attack, Strength, Defence, and Magic to Fishing, Smithing, Cooking, and Woodcutting. This flexible progression, measured largely through experience points and skill levels, became one of the game’s defining features. Quest writing gave Gielinor much of its identity. Early adventures such as Cook’s Assistant introduced simple errands, while Dragon Slayer required players to defeat Elvarg on Crandor and traditionally served as a major milestone. Later quest lines expanded conflicts involving gods including Saradomin, Zamorak, Guthix, Armadyl, Bandos, and Seren. The Mahjarrat and the World Guardian became central to several modern story arcs. RuneScape’s holiday events, especially its annual Christmas content, also established a long-running tradition. Areas such as Varrock, Falador, Lumbridge, and the Wilderness are not merely scenery: they anchor tutorial paths, quests, player combat, commerce, and events across Gielinor. In March 2004, Jagex launched RuneScape 2, a substantial replacement for the original version, with updated graphics and a new game engine. The original game subsequently became known as RuneScape Classic and was permanently closed in August 2018. RuneScape 3 arrived in July 2013, bringing an updated interface and the Evolution of Combat system, which added ability-based combat alongside legacy options. In February 2013, Jagex also released Old School RuneScape, built from a 2007 backup of RuneScape. Its updates are commonly decided through player polls; for years, many proposals required 75 percent approval to pass. Both versions receive ongoing development. RuneScape’s economy has long depended on player exchange. The Grand Exchange, introduced in 2007, provides a central marketplace where players place buy and sell offers for items. Membership unlocks much of the map, additional quests, and skills such as Agility, Slayer, Farming, and Archaeology; Archaeology was added to RuneScape 3 in 2020. Old School RuneScape has also pursued new skills after launch; Sailing was approved through a successful player poll. Across its versions, RuneScape has remained notable for persistent characters, a player-driven economy, and an unusually extensive quest catalogue created through more than two decades of updates and narrative expansion.
