Metaphor: ReFantazio is a 2024 role-playing game developed by Studio Zero and published by Atlus. It was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S on October 11, 2024. The project is led by director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro, the core creative team associated with Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5. Unlike those modern-school settings, Metaphor presents a high-fantasy world while examining political anxiety, prejudice, and the danger of idealized social systems.

The story takes place in the United Kingdom of Euchronia, a realm destabilized after the assassination of its king. The kingdom’s succession is decided through a nationwide contest: candidates seek popular support, and the person judged most worthy will become ruler. The protagonist is an Elda, a people treated with suspicion, who begins a journey to break the curse afflicting the missing prince. He is accompanied by Gallica, a fairy; Strohl, a noble-born warrior; Hulkenberg, a former royal guard; Heismay, an Eugief; and Junah, a renowned singer. Their travels use the Gauntlet Runner, a vehicle that functions as both transport and a setting for conversations and activities.

Its combat system combines turn-based commands with the “Press Turn” framework and a flexible Archetype system. Characters can unlock and inherit abilities from Archetypes, which are manifestations of heroic ideals. The Seeker, Mage, Knight, and other Archetypes occupy distinct roles, while later forms expand tactical options. Exploiting an enemy’s weakness grants additional actions, but mistakes can also make battles costly. Outside combat, players manage time, strengthen bonds with followers, improve royal virtues, and choose destinations on the road, creating a calendar structure distinct in presentation from Persona.

The game’s visual identity draws on medieval and religious imagery, surreal interface design, and artwork by Soejima. Its soundtrack, composed by Shoji Meguro, uses orchestral, choral, and electronic colors, while the user interface employs bright, stylized typography throughout battles.

Development began under Studio Zero, an internal Atlus team established in 2016, and the game was first revealed as Project Re Fantasy in 2017. Atlus later showed its definitive title at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023. A playable “Prologue Demo” was released before launch, allowing progress to carry into the full game. Metaphor received strong critical attention for its setting, writing, and combat, and it won awards including Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2024, where it also competed for Game of the Year.
