
Tennis for Two was created in 1958 by William Higinbotham, a physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. Higinbotham was then head of Brookhaven’s Instrumentation Division and wanted an exhibit that would make the laboratory’s annual visitors’ day more engaging. Rather than displaying only static scientific equipment, he devised an interactive electronic tennis simulation shown on an analog computer connected to an oscilloscope. The game displayed a side view of a tennis court: a horizontal line represented the ground, a short vertical line represented the net, and a bright point represented the ball. Players used separate aluminum controllers equipped with a button and a knob. The knob set the launch angle, while the button sent the ball into play. The computer calculated the ball’s trajectory using values for gravity and wind resistance, so a shot followed a curved path and could clear or strike the net. Higinbotham designed the game with technician Robert V. Dvorak, who helped assemble the circuitry and equipment. It debuted at Brookhaven’s visitor day on October 18, 1958, and reportedly drew long lines of people waiting to play. The following year, Brookhaven presented an updated version with a larger oscilloscope screen and different simulated gravitational conditions, allowing players to experience how the ball would behave on another planet. Tennis for Two was not sold as a consumer product and was dismantled after its demonstrations. Higinbotham did not seek a patent for it, regarding it as a simple visitors’ day attraction. Consequently, its original hardware no longer survives as a complete playable installation. Its existence is documented in Brookhaven records and in later accounts by Higinbotham and Dvorak. The game became historically prominent decades later during disputes concerning early video-game patents. In 1982, Magnavox challenged Atari in litigation involving patents associated with Ralph Baer’s television game work. Higinbotham gave testimony about Tennis for Two, explaining that its display used an oscilloscope rather than a television set. The case did not establish Tennis for Two as the first video game; instead, its relevance included whether earlier electronic games affected patent claims. Often described as one of the earliest interactive electronic games, Tennis for Two predates Spacewar! by several years. Its significance lies in its 1958 demonstration of real-time player control and simulated physics on laboratory equipment, not in a narrative or commercial release. Brookhaven reconstructed the game for historical exhibitions using surviving documentation from the original design.
